I have a Mossberg 500 shotgun and I decided I wanted to swap a 590 barrel and magazine tube on it. I bought an 18.5" 590 barrel and a 590 5 shot magazine tube which is supposed to work with the 18.5" barrel. I also bought a +2 mag extension from S&J hardware which is flush with the end of the barrel. When I went to assemble everything it was as if the magazine tube was about 2" too short. I checked to make sure the barrel was fully seated in the receiver and it was. I also held the +2 extension up against the barrel lug and sure enough it was flush with the muzzle. I measured the barrel and it is an 18.5" barrel so the only thing left is that the magazine tube is defective or something. The tube I have is just shy of 13.5" but with the way everything lines up it looks like it needs to be 15.5". Can someone tell me what the proper length is of a 5-shot Mossberg 590 magazine tube so I know I'm barking up the right tree?

OK, so I have the wrong magazine tube. I have a magazine tube for a 14"barreled 590 and that the 18.5" mag tube is supposed to be 14.75". Couldn't find a 14.74" 590 tube but the 835 uses the same tube. I imagine the only difference is the 590 is parkerized and the 835 is blued but it's going on a 500 receiver which is also blued so whatever.

I should have just sold my 500 and bought a 590 but when I took on this project I thought this would be less of a hassle.

BigHoss you are right, you would have been better ahead to sell your 500 and buy a 590. I just measured my 18.5" 590 mag tube and it is about 14 5/8" I'd say go with the 835 mag tube unless you can find one of those parts takeoff kits that include everything but the receiver. Where did you find a 590 barrel floating around?
