I want a Shotgun for home.
I am wanted to go hunting Chukar birds and Buck.
Could I use the 590 mariner 9 shot 20" barrel to do all three?

I am not expecting to go and deaden a whole lotta birds.
Nor am I expecting to push a Sabot a hundred yards.

Main goal is to protect the home; as for hunting, I want it to be fun, and to at least have a chance of hitting something.

Any experts?
Sorry for my ignorance as maybe I need three different guns, but I thought I'd ask.

Zach

Great for HD. You'll have a chance at hitting something for wingshooting, but it would be a lot better chance with a 5 shot mag and a conventional barrel. Balance counts for a lot in wingshooting. The cylinder choke should be fine for conventional slugs (use Brennekes), but you'll want some kind of sights. Be sure to install a long magazine plug for hunting.

All in all you'd be better off with a second Mossberg for hunting. I like to have a dedicated HD gun that is always ready in the proper configuration, not being fiddled with.

It's an interesting question, I dont think it would adapt to hunting chukar at all even with a full choke. I've heard the closest comparison around here would be prarie chicken. Which calls for full choke and 30" barrels. If you pattern it and its throwing Improved Cylinder. You could adapt to dove over a small pond, but not pass shooting. You could even hunt duck over again a small pond like a pothole, but you would really have to pick your shots. I have used an Ithaca riot gun, and a Deerslayer but they are choked for improved cylinder. Quail in the thicket, or sumac patches even in a creek bottom. As a blocking gun on driven pheasants. I cant think of any thing else except coyotes or bobcat coming to a predator call. It would not be ideal and you would have the longest magazine plug ever for the dove and ducks. I'm not familiar with the model I'm thinking the high cap riot gun. You could use it for more things if its threaded for chokes.
You could use it but I think it would piss you off a little always having to pick your shots. If you haven't already bought it, I'd get a 500 with 2 barrels. 1 long 1 short. I'm really likeing the mossberg 835s more geared towards hunting and with the 24" turkey barrel a pretty good house gun. If your wife shoots it she wont like it being too heavy, until you explain a heavy gun kicks less. She might go for it. I would also say a Benelli nova or super nova with a 24" barrel it has tubes. I don't know if you can get close enough to chukar to walk them up. It would work in that case.

According to Mossberg's website it's a cylinder bore:

SPECIAL PURPOSE SHOTGUN - 500® MARINER® 9 SHOT 20" CYLINDER BORE

Good for home defense. Next to worthless for hunting. That 9 shot magazine is going to have the handling qualities of a pressure treated 4x4 and unless you catch the birds on siesta, they'll be out of range before you can get the thing to your shoulder. I don't know about California but there are a lot of states that prohibit hunting with extended magazines. I assume it isn't supplied with a "duck plug"...

I bust hand-thrown clays with my 590 mariner 9 shot, but I would never consider taking it chukar hunting. Hunting chukars around here means hiking. A lot.

A standard 500 with 2 barrels is your best bet, IMO. A few places sell "combos" that come with both HD and hunting barrels.

Isn't that what a sling is for? So the guys that are saying yes it can be done, weight is the issue?

And others who are concerned about accuracy, I should look for a combo, or a dedicated bird gun.

I would love to hear Dave's input.

The choke is open/cylinder bore
It weighs a lot, and the weight is forward
The barrel is relatively short

It's not IDEAL for birds. Can it be done? Yes. Are there many, many better choices? Yes.
The standard 500 with an 18.5" barrel is certainly adequate for HD. If 5 shots of buck don't solve your problem, you're in over your head anyway, IMO.

And it's much more compatible with barrel swaps than the 590 with the long mag tube.

I dont think unless fully loaded weight would be too much, Balance would suck.
Plugs are not that hard to come by, I've used sticks. Cylinder bore is the deal breaker, skeet for practice, quail in the thickets.
Get a 500 if you need to sell it, its not as specialized.

OK 2 different critters. I would much rather fight with a bird gun, than hunt with a fight gun.
accuracy doest apply as much as useable pattern.

Won't a vent rib barrel for an 835 fit a 590? If the magazines are the same length and the barrel will fit, I'd just get an 18.5" 590 with a short magazine tube (6 shot version) for HD, then find a spare 28" 835 VR barrel for birds, clays etc and call it good. If you really want more magazine room, they make magazine extensions for the 590 that will up its capacity.

And if the above won't work (and you know it's coming) then just get an 870 :D. NO, JUST KIDDING! Seriously, I'd rather have the 590 than the 500 even if the 500 is available as a package deal with both barrels, and if the above 590/835 kludge will work (I'm not 100% sure, but then I don't do Mossbergs much) then that's the way I'd go, if I were going to make a 590 my 'do everything' shotgun.

Lee, Don't know if that would work or not, I had to try and find a picture, as I'm not familiar with the 590. Good thing I did Because I thought you were talking about a 930!

I would agree it do look stouter than 500. I would say If distance to barrel mounting ring is same, and I dont know if overbore barrel/porting 835 barrel would match up to receiver. Might work but I would sure hate anybody to spend money on that project, based on my sayso. I have picked up 2 835s used , 1 black ,1 shadow grass. $150, whined about sales flyer deal that they are always out of, (Gander) got turkey barrel $50. I kind of dig the porting, and overbore barrel, turkey and 28" both have it. 1 gun 2 barrels $200. with the 28" barrel mod tube, estate shells shot a 74 at SC. I can not tell you how pleased I am with that, That rivals my score with $1400 Benelli Super Sport.

Now is the 590 the one that met the MILSPEC a while back, and mag tube unscrews for cleaning? I would sure be intrested to know how they are holding up.

I was also gonna say 870......express....just got the nickers untwisted tho, so I didn't

I know I said on one thread, I would'nt port an 870, and like it on the 835.
Little conflicting, to clarify I would not pay extra to have it done. I also would use it if it came on the gun.

I decided I'm just going to get the 870 tactical, and screw in a full choke and try it out. If I like hunting and the fighting gun doesn't work up to snuff then I will buy a bird gun too, and if I dont like hunting. No bigger, I got my hd gun.

I'm on board with recommending a regular mossberg for both hunting and HD. nine in the mag tube would be a lot of gun to pony around. It would also make for a very long weapon for HD. just my thought

You're right about the weight and more importantly, the balance. But a 9 shot 590 has a 20" barrel, a whopping inch and a half longer than a 6 shot.
