So I PPTed a 'Mossberg 500'. I didn't get a really good look at it, but I know it was 9-shot. Now that I'm reading up on it, it seems like it was actually a 590. CA has the 10 day wait, and I'm pretty curious right now as to whether I got a 500 or 590. Does it being 9 shot and not a Mariner mean its a 590? My assumption is based on this

I believe the 500 models mostly have the 18.5" barrel. Most of these hold 6 + 1 in 2.75 shells. Both the 500's and 590 have a large variety of accessories.

Your is probably a 590. they usually have a 20" barrel. This allows a longer mag tube, thus, more sheels in the tube.

The 500 series has 20" bbl, a blind magazine, and 7+1 capacity, the 590 has a 20" bbl, an open magazine, and 8+1 capacity

I can assure you, my mossy 500 tactial has an 18.5 barrel.

I'll be the first to confirm the 500's come in any way shape and form. Huge varitey of options. I believe model 500 refers a specific type. The The 590 has a slightly different receiver. I may be wrong about that.

I owned a 590 w/20" barrel, 8+1, ghost ring sites, speed feed stock (overated), and a nice strap. Sure wish I didn't sell it a few years back. Sweet gun, but so is the 500 tactical:)

The 500s hold one less shell because the mag cap screws into the tube unlike the 590s. As you noted the Mariner version is called a 500 but has the 590 style mag cap. Why they call it a 500 instead of a 590 is confusing. I think Mossberg should make all their shotguns with the 590 style mag cap.
