Okay.....I know I posted about getting a Maverick or NEF PP, but I believe I found a good deal on a Mossberg 590, for $410 after taxes, at one of my local shops. I really was another Mossberg so bad I can taste it. I have researched the 590 a little, but can anyone elaborate for me about its reliability, etc?

The 590 has the same action as the model 500, so it's very reliable. The 590 would be a much better choice than a standard 500. I prefer the 18.5" barrel 590A1.

The $410 could be a good deal but it depends on what model 590 you are looking at. There are several models.

What Max said. The 590 is a good serious shotgun, I don't think you'll be disappointed with it.

I won't mention the 590 Marinecote I got on Gunbroker a few months ago for a little over $200 plus shipping, though... :D

How

I bid just over the minimum listed, and apparently no one else in the country wanted a 590 that had been spray painted OD green... no one else bid on it. :D

In the investing business, that's called a 'stink bid.' It works on Gunbroker too, if you can manage not to get all caught up in the whole auction-runaway thing. Bid on a good deal and walk away, and see what happens.

Shaddup Lee!

Besides, ha, you had to do all that work to, um, wipe the paint off with, um, a towel full of paint remover -- so there. Hardly worth it when you factor in the, um, minutes of labor and slight odor...

590's -- top shelf. Old and newer 590A1's.

I would say that it is a good deal. Even better if it is the 9 shot version. Either way, the 590 is a good gun. Just be aware that you may need to replace the mag tube spring as this seems to be somewhat of a weak point, based on my experience and that of several others. Simple enough though, just buy a "standard" style Wolff spring, cut it to the desired length, shape the ends a bit and you are set.

Personally, I wish I had gone with a 590A1 (sporting a heavy walled barrel, aluminum trigger assembly and a metal safety). Unfortunately, I could not find one at the time and after buying my 590, simply ordered the necessary parts to "convert" it to an A1. It ended up costing me over $200 more vs. actually having had bought one in the first place. Oh well.

Regardless, I believe the 590 is a great shotgun. I love the "features" it presents.
