Has anyone tried the newest Mossberg 590A1 shotguns with 3-dot sights? I'm curious as to how they handle and how quickly they can be acquired. I read somewhere that they are patterned after a handgun's 3-dot sights, but I do not know if that is accurate.

are you asking if it is accurate that they are patterned after the handgun type 3-dot sights or is the 3-dot sight system is accurate when used on a shotgun?

i guess an initial question might be, is the 3-dot system accurate on a handgun. it can be, but there are better systems...faster ones

And do you really need three-dot sights on a HD gun where the average distance is about 15 feet? - You SHOULD be focusing on your target, not your sights. learn to POINT the shotgun, not aim it (long-range deer/slug hunting excepted)

The answer to the question about target acquisition is the same as it always is: slower than without the sights.

Note that, in International Skeet, there's an official watching you, and you are penalized if you move the gun above a line on your vest before the target appears (on a random delay after "pull" is called). So these guys have to wait until they see the target, THEN shoulder the gun, acquire it and fire. They also shoot doubles, which are going in opposite directions, and fast.

I generally like open sights for all around use, since they allow for precise shooting when you need it and can be overlooked when you need to point shoot. However these Mossberg sights just seem to be too chunky and don't seem to do either job all that well.

Got one, it's as accurate as the shooter. I suggest Hornady TAP for HD

Those are the sights that were developed for the NYPD. NYPD uses them on 14" 590A1s and have had them in service a little over a year. They were LOOSELY based on pistol sights such as the ones from Novak. I believe they are still only availible through TALO distributors.
