So I've been doing more research on the 590a1 and I came across some upsetting threads and complaints about the 591a1 and Mossberg. A number of people claim that Mossberg's recent quality control really stinks. I can't remember everything that was said but it has me worried. I really like the 590a1 and would love to buy one, but what if I get a piece of crap. Should I take a gamble and get one?

I bought a brand-new one last year and haven't had any problems with it after a couple thousand rounds. People will bad-mouth anything.

I would say get it. Your not going to hunt with it or put on a Pistol Grip are you?
Cause man they'll be on you like a pack of wild dogs....Ooh.

I just want to get one for the home and to take to the range once in awhile. It would be my only gun for some time and because of that I want to know that I can trust it if I ever need it for home defense. Or when I take it to the range.

I wouldn't worry overly much about QC from any major manufacturer. It's a pumpgun, not a space capsule (those are built by the lowest bidder too, BTW).

Buy it. Clean it, especially the barrel and chamber, before you ever shoot it.

Then shoot it A LOT. Then clean it again. Rinse and repeat. Don't futz around with the gun, taking it all apart to its smallest pieces etc., just shoot it, field strip it as needed and clean it. I suspect that a certain percentage of people who have trouble with new guns cause that trouble themselves (wonder what this does? Can I make it slam fire?) by doing stuff to/with the gun they have no business doing.

After a while you'll know if you can trust it to function reliably or not. And if you're seriously worried, look for a good used one and buy that.

Happy shopping,

lpl

sch84, He didnt mean it like that. You have probably the most legit question on here tonight. I've heard this guy post before he isn't assuming you will wreck your gun cleaning it. and I 'm still giggling about the space shuttle jab.

Sometimes when I leave one thread for another, I'm still in 5th gear, and it comes out kind of strong.

Yes you should be ok. but shoot it until you think so don't go on what someone else thinks.

Like Lee said. It's a well built and designed shotgun that should serve your family well for a century or so if maintained and exercised....

I'm going to suggest one more thing to you and to many others who are getting into buying modern built firearms.

Spend a few extra dollars and buy the video/CD assembly and dis-assembly for that model gun. The ones meant for gunsmithing like AGI puts out. Learn everything about your gun and its mechanics. Know how it works, know how to tear it down, and put it back together. Most of these guns are not so complicated that the average person can't learn to do that. Know how the parts interact with each other.

Now- after you know all about the thing, you can put, and keep, your gun in good working order. You can smooth up the right parts, and adjust others to improve reliability and working effectiveness.

What modern guns mostly lack is the hands on tweaking and adjusting that used to be part of the build process years ago.

PS: OK - OK !! I do know that some of you will only get into deep dew-dew because you have no mechanical ability whatever. For those folks - know your limitations !!! Still buy the video and watch it a few times - you WILL learn something more valuable than the cost of the video.

Thanks for all the replies. I have to put a new starter in my car and I hope to have enough money left over today to do a layway on the 590. If not then I have to shoot ;)(no pun intended) for next week.
