I found a Remington 870 Police mag at my local gun shop so I put money down on it and will pick it up in a couple of weeks. I did some more research on both the Mossberg 590a1 and the 870 Police. I got in contact with Wilson Combat and Nighthawk Custom. Both agreed that the 870 is a great shotgun but they also said the Mossberg 590a1 was really good as well. In fact the guy at Wilson said they are going to start carrying accessories for Mossberg after the first of the year. So I really don't think one is that one is greater than the other. It just comes down to which one a person prefers. I guess I'm writing about this because I had a real hard time trying to decide between the two, as do many other folks. I got real tired hearing one person say Remington is great and Mossberg stinks or Mossberg is great and Remington stinks. In my quest to find which was the perfect shotgun on this and other forums I really got no where. Why, Because there is no perfect shotgun. There's just what you personally like.;)

The most important part of any shotgun is the nut behind the butt...

You got a good one, now shoot it till you know it like your tongue knows your teeth.

Mossberg and Remington are both very good to great shotguns. At work we have Mossbergs with 18" barrels. At home I have 2 Remington 870 Wingmasters with 20 " rifle sight barrels. The Remingtons' action is smoother but the Mossberg is a strong performer at a cheaper price. Either one will serve you well.

I'm also planning on getting a 590a1 sometime early next year. I'd keep one downstairs and one upstairs where I sleep. I like keeping some kind of weapon in all areas of my house, just in case. I bought five surplus wood police batons and I keep them in different areas of the house. At $5.00 a piece I figured what the heck. Oh and there are no children in the house.:)

personally i think the benelli nova is an excellent alternative to the rem and mossberg. oh i mean benelli rules and remington and mossberg stink.:banghead:

I'm sure the Benelli nova and supernova are fine shotguns. I did look into them but I found them to be uncomfortable to hold and operate. They just didn't fit me well. Why buy a so called perfect gun when it's uncomfortable to shoot? I think the 870P will do just fine for (ME THE PERSON WHO HAS TO USE IT).

I think you made a wise choice. I went through a similar experince before
deciding on buying my 870HD. Both are good shotguns. However, the 870s are IMHO a nicer gun.

There is still a little America left so I have both a Remington 870 AND a Mossberg 500 in HD mode. No need for non american shotguns here ! :neener:

Oh ! And I make a case for the 20ga. in the HD roll - now there is some mud slinging topic one could get worked up about. But a different thread no doubt.

I am not a detractor of Mossberg but I personally own two Police Wingmasters and a Police Magnum. I believe you made a very good choice myself.

shoot it till you know it like your tongue knows your teeth

This is a great analogy, as well as the ultimate advice for any weapon you plan on using to potentially save your life!

My preference between the Remington and the Mossberg (with a lot of experience with both) is the 870. That is mostly because I've had one since I was 12 years old, and I've shot so many birds and clays with it, that it does feel like an extension of my body. Nothing gets you familiar with your shotgun faster than a lot of competitive clay shooting or action-packed bird hunting.

I'd suggest investing in a 28" barrel, and shooting through so many cases of clay pigeons that you wake up in the night yelling "PULL!"

The Remington 870 is a great choice.

own them both and love them both. The biggest difference in them is the safety. With the safety location on the Remington using thumbhole and pistol grips (I prefer pistol grips) is very easy, the safety on the Mossi does not allow this to be nearly as easy. OTOH, the Mossi has a very nice ambidextrous safety that allows (me) to use it with more natural ease than the Remington.

Which one is better? Who cares? I just wanna see yours when you get it, that was a hint to put pics up:D
