I want a 930 SPX for HD, but the only 930 I can find is the Tactical with the breacher on the end of the barrel. Are these at all practical for HD. or should I hold out for the SPX?

Ask if the store can order one for you in the model you want. If it's not an obscure manufacturer or a firearm that's made in limited quantities, then you should easily be able to order one.

Sidenote - if my LGS has the gun in stock, I'll go with them due to lower prices than national chains. However, the national chains (i.e. Cabelas) will usually accept orders over the phone, for free, while the LGS will require an in-person order with a deposit.

930 with the standoff breacher is a market gimmick, if you ask me. Breaching shotguns are usually pump-action to better deal with the special rounds.

Me personally - I would want a new from factory 930. The older models had problems with canted sights, poor mating of the extension tube creating hangups, and other problems. I wouldn't want to hassle with trying to figure out if the model at the store was 3rd generation or not.

The Mossberg owners forum has a lot of good data:

I personally wouldn't get the breacher just to get a 930.

This is what I have said before about the SPX as a HD weapon:

I still wouldn't choose a SPX, it is a specific purpose weapon, the plain 930 combo would suit his needs and be about $100 cheaper an give him 2 barrels:

The SPX is a fine weapon, but you are seriously handicapping someone who is new to shotguns. The LPA sights are cumbersome for someone at the entry level. A 930 combo with 18 1/2" HD/SD barrel and 28" bird/clays barrel will offer him everything he wants and more, more fun on the clay field and in the corn field if he chooses. I paid $525 + shipping for my combo, you cannot find a new SPX for that. I used the $100 and added the screw in Invector choke system and a tritium front sight to the 18 1/2" barrel.

Can you put the Nordic extension tube on the combo?

Can any of the 930 barrels go on the combo - like the rifled bore ?

My nephew duck hunts with me and his gets dragged in and out the boat, water, brush and mud and hasn't quit yet. I hunted with Brownings and Benellis for nearly 20 yrs and this yr I am using a 930, I trust it wholeheartedly.

So for your 18½" barrel you got a tritium front sight. Do you have rear sights ? Or do you just use that tritium front sight like a single bead sight?

I'd like to get into trap shooting and I am looking at the SPX as a HD shotgun, but I'm not sure the combo is a good gun for a beginner to learn trap shooting with. Maybe I'd be better off with an over/under for the trap shooting and the SPX for HD.

I went shopping for the 930 SPX, but wound up with the 930 JM Pro, which has a 22" barrel instead of 18.5", and regular fiber-optic front sight with no rear. It's a bit less expensive than the SPX. The "JM" is for Jerry Miculek, who was endorsing this model at the last SHOT Show. I tried it out last weekend at a three-gun match, and it worked flawlessly with a mix of rifled slugs and low-brass birdshot.

I went to a different gun store yesterday looking for an SPX. The only one they had was one with a longer, ported barrel with fiber-optic sights. They also had an FN SLP w/ 18.5 in. barrel, and Benellis in M1, M2 and M4 configurations. After some deliberation, I bought the FN. I'm going to start another thread asking for experience with this shotgun, but wanted to give you guys who responded to this thread an update.
