I heard that ATR had broken extractor problem and many had multiple failures. Have they fixed it yet? The extractor seems to be the same design as Savage and Merlin X7, what cause Mossberg having this issue? MIM part quality? PSA has year end clearance on ATR for $315 and offers $100 gift card, I ordered one in 308, not knowing there was an extractor issue. Does the rifle worth $215 (after gift card)+ $15 shipping + FFL?

No, the Mossberg 1500 was a Howa. However, the ATR definitely has Howa design features. It is something of a Howa/Savage hybrid though only in design, not dimensions. This was originally the Charter Arms Field King. Mossberg bought the tooling & drawings, adapted them to the Savage 110 barrel nut, and began manufacturing it as the ATR 100.

It was the Raptor Rifle Company before it was the Charter Arms rifle. The Mossberg ATR has failed in the gun market twice before under different names. Mossberg buys it, puts their name on it and people assume because of the Mossberg name it is a good gun. It is not.

What is the problem with the design? The bolt is the same basic design as Savage and it comes with a blade trigger that is not available on Stevens and Mossberg is at least $50 cheaper than the competition.
Also, I heard Merlin X7 has similar MIM extractor breakage problem and folks are using modified Savage extractors. Would Savage extractor fits ATR?

Raptor failed as it was an unknown manufacturer. Charter 2000 failed as a company and when it was reorganized, only revolvers were kept.

I have a Mossberg ATR100 rifle in 30-06. I really like that rifle I hunt with it and it is more than accurate for hunting. My handloads shoot 3/4" 3 shot groups. I haven't had any issues with mine and I haven't heard about the extractor problems. For the $ I'd say that you did good. Trigger is an Accutrigger copy my trigger breaks consistently at 3.2lbs and the action is fairly smooth. Plus the stock is better than the Axis, Ruger American, and Marlin stocks.

At the time, the Mossberg 100ATR and the Remington 710 were the only base-model rifles out there. The ATR was a much better rifle than the 710 or the derivative 770 (did Remington really think that changing the dress and lipstick would make the pig more interesting?). The ATR's market success led to the dressed up 4x4 or Trophy Hunter, which are as good a rifle as standard 700's or Savage 111's and brought serious competition for mid-grade rifles. That and the MVP short action more-or-less forced Ruger, Savage, and Marlin to get back into the budget rifle race. The ATR is a rifle that can be upgraded like a Stevens 200 by the end user but also is an action that can be made fancier at the factory.

Were it not for the ATR's success, there would be no American, Axis, Stevens 200, or X7 (or the 4x4 or short action MVP). Those companies had to compete with Mossberg as they were losing market share in a financial move not that different from Savage in the 1990's.

I do think ATR is a good rifle for the money, many report that it is accurate. Previous bolt separation rumor kept me away from it and now PSA offers it at such a great price, so I ordered one. Extractor issues was new to me until I searched on internet and there were quite a few reports on it and many replaced it more than once! The worst part is many reported that Mossberg requires owners to ship back the rifles to do warranty work instead of shipping the extractors. I hope it is just a bad batch and they are over with it. Savage has similar extractor and I have never heard any issue with it.
