I have a M500A, and am wondering what all is involved with installation of the factory ghost ring sights.

It looks as if the rear sight just bolts into the factory spot on the receiver, but what about the front? Does the barrel just need to be drilled, or is it more complicated?

The front sight is brazed on with high-temp brazing compound at the factory.

For a non-factory job you have at least four ways to go:

1. Silver "solder" (Actually silver braze) the sight on.
This requires a silver solder that melts around 1100 degrees, which is a red heat.
This will hold forever, but the barrel will have to be refinished, since the heat ruins it.
This is how the factory does it.

2. SOFT solder it on.
This holds very well and doesn't damage the finish "IF" you're careful to keep the flux off the finish. These soft solders melt around 400 to 600 degrees.

3. Attach the sight with the new Loctite Black MAX.
This is a new super-adhesive with a rubbery filler that is used to glue shotgun ribs and sights on.
It's reported to be VERY strong, but not as strong as soft or silver solder.
Buy it from Brownell's.

4. Use a CLAMP-ON front sight.
These simply clamp on the barrel with screws and are easy to install or remove.
Once on, they STAY put:
