Who owns a Mossberg with factory GR sights?

I'm thinking about taking my Mossberg 500A and shortening the barrel to 20", removing the rib, and then adding some ghost ring sights.

Factory Mossberg ghost ring sights are by far the cheapest on the market. My reciever is already drilled and tapped for the rear and I'll have to solder on the front.

What I'd like to know from owners is this; how useable are the sights?
I have handled a 590 with the sights and they look fine for short range deer and defense, but have not shot one or messed with the adjustments.
Does the factory rear give sufficient windage and elevation adjustment?
How coarse are the adjustments?
Have you ever lost zero?

My 590 with Ghost Rings is a 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" gun at 50-yards using Winchester Super-X 1-oz or Federal Vital-Shok 1-oz slugs (Off a bag rest, mind you).

One click of elevation is approximately 1/2" @ 50-yards, perhaps a little bit more. The Mossberg GRs elevation wheel has very positive click stops and I doubt your setting would wander off. Never had to fool with the windage screw... sorry I can't answer that portion of your question.

I know the GR on 870s as seen in Wilson/Scattergun Tech and Vang Comp are positioned slightly further rearward because there is no thumb safety to interfere with it. And they are build somewhat heavier for heavy pounding.

Still, I find the Mossberg set-up to be very quick to acquire and quite useable.

Would it be cheaper to buy a 590 barrel and add the rear sight than try to remove a vent-rib and refinish the barrel and braze on a front sight?

I think they're fantastic!

I've banged my shotgun around plenty and the only time they've lost zero is when I've removed the barrel... to be expected. They seem very robust. The adjustment is so simple, no-nonsense. And I like the sight picture.

I used them with high satifaction through a 3 day "tactical shotgun" course and, about 1100rnds later, came away thrilled.

My only wish would be for a tritium insert... but that would drive the (very reasonable) price up.

To save the best for last: 100yd accuracy with slugs. You'd think I was exagerating if I told you what my shotgun could do at 100yds with Remington Slugsters. Put it this way, they are groups that ANY rifleman would be proud of... honest.

+1 on Jordan's comments! Shot a two day 3-Gun with my 590A1 and no problems at all. 1 click= ~1/2 inch @ 50 yards is what I saw also

Cheaper? nah.
The sights will be about $60, $100-150 for a barrel.
If I do it myself then it will cost just $60 for the sights and time. I just graduated and am currently unemployed, so time is no issue.
I was planning on painting the shotgun in a digital camo pattern later, so refinishing is not an issue either.
