Recently acquired a 20" Mossberg M590A1 for a song. Only problem was the factory ghost ring rear sight was removed and replaced with a full length pic rail. Original sight wasn't included.

The front sight is the blade style.

I would be happy just with a replacement rear ghost ring, but not opposed to replacing front and rear. I have no opinion on a pic top rail. I would heavily prefer winged rear sight.

So far, research has shown the following options:

Factory replacement:
Pros: Cheapest ($85 on Amazon)
Knowing I am getting the correct height.
Complete set, so having a spare front sight
Cons: Seem flimsy
Reports of elevation screw stripping

Aimpro:
Pros: Winged rear with rail
Good reviews (on product only)
Seems to be exactly what I want.
Cons: Their reputation for "in stock" rivals Botach
Reputation of taking money with no communication for up to 2 years.
Website says out of stock, store website says in stock (again back to the communication issue)

Vang:
Pros: Seem to be the best in the business.

Cons: Claims not to work with factory height front sight, so would need to purchase front, rear, pay to get new front soldered on or have them install. So now my sight cost more than the gun. Fine for glass on a rifle, not so much for irons on a scatter gun.

XS:
Pros: I like the idea of tritium front sight.
Winged rear if you get non rail model.
Cons: Numerous reports of adjustment screws stripping out with little force.

Soooo....are there any other options out there? Should I roll the dice with Aimpro? I am open to suggestions.

My receiver is drilled and tapped.
And before those who start with the "just get a bead sight" chime in, I have a 18" Remmy 870 with a bead. This is a chance to try something different.

Thanks in advance.

Well I took the chance and ordered the Aimpro on Thur 1-3-19. I had tracking that it had shipped on 1-4-19. I did this as all the negative feedback seemed to be from a period in 2012-2013.

The Weaver Ghost Ring with .215 apeture sold by NECG might work with that rail. It's designed for rifles but if it fits the rail I see no reason it could not be used on shotgun.

The rail that was mounted on it was a cheap Monstrum. Holes were not drilled in line, and were larger than the screws, so it could move while tightened. Also were an oddball size, barely got them out with a 2.5mm allen wrench.

Aimpro arrived yesterday. Mounts using the three forward holes. Drop of blue lockette on each screw...nice and solid. I'm a happy customer.

Yo Mot,

Glad every thing worked out.

Separately, I have had several experiences with Vang Comp and Mossbergs - absolutely top shelf. Hans is great to work with.

Best

Glad you are happy with your new Aimpro sight.

I do have to add that I have the factory Mossberg ghost ring and I do not consider it flimsy. In fact it's very solid and well-built. In a boneheaded moment, I have had my 590A1 fall off the bench (luckily unloaded) and land square on the rear sight without damage or loss of zero. Just another data point.

If the original owner hadn't replaced the factory ghost ring, then lost it, I believe I would have been content with that. In this case, the cheap Monstrum rail was not something I would rely on for a potential HD gun.

I'm hoping to get it out tomorrow or this weekend and put it through a workout. I know it may seem like sacrilege, but I am digging the control placement over my 18" 870. Only down side I'm seeing is this thing is a beast in the weight department, and the LOP on the factory stock is too long for me. I want to see how it runs before I give it the Magpul treatment.

I am an AR guy, with very little experience in shotgunning. I only have the 590A1 and Remmy tac. But this is quickly developing into a fever, because I am now heavily researching an auto (Beretta 1301)

Good thing it is in my marriage vows that I get 2 unquestioned gun purchases a month as long as bills are paid.

I just got my new to me 590SP today. LOVE the factory ghost ring sights. Quick to the shoulder and align just looking through the aperture that blurs out and using the top of the orange blade as my aim point. Very quick and instinctive.

This is the 590 A1...heavy barrel, metal follower, safety, and trigger housing.

Would you guys say the plastic safety is a MUST replace, or just a nice mod to do? Also, which is the best aftermarket one to use?

The plastic safety will break over time. Really your choice, wait til it breaks - or change it proactively. Vang makes a good product. I am sure there are others.

In my case the safety broke, there was no resistance - so it would flop on and off. This was in the middle of a duck hunt. I was not concerned for the safety being “on” as if we were moving, the gun was empty. If the gun was loaded, we were hunting. All rules apply. The problem was during hunting the safety may be on or off. So we broke the gun down and ripped the safety out to complete the hunt. Safety is between the ears, not a mechanical piece.
