The best choice is to ge a Ithaca Model 37, the factory has a lefthand safety that can be installed very easly.
With the cross bolt safety your grip on the gun is not altered when operating it, just a push with the finger. With a tang safety mounted forward, your grip is compromised when the thumb is moved.
Lastly there is no safety piece interfearing with your field of vision. I have a 500 in 20 gauge, but when mounting the gun that safety is distracting to me as the reciever is not a smooth surface with that piece of plastic sticking up.
Used Ithaca Model 37's can be found at reasonable prices. If you want a short barreled gun, thn look for one after 855,000 serial number as the barrels can be interchanged.
The earlier guns , barrels were fitted to each reciever and barrels are not interchangeable.
For small game/bird hunting the 16 or 20 gauge has no equal in the field. There are many who own the M 37 feel there is no gun made that can equal it.
