Mossberg/Maverick Question

The Maverick is the old Mossy single action bar design. They were very reliable guns, good shooters. I had an old single action bar Mossy built "Revelation" for a good while for waterfowl until I decided I couldn't live without the bling of camo. :D I was noticing while I was duck hunting Thursday morning that my current M500 says "Eagle Pass, Texas" on the barrel. I didn't realize all the Mossies were built there, thought it was just the Mavericks. Interesting. Eagle Pass is a border town across the river from Piedras Negras. Lots of cheap labor there. Probably pay about like the Red Chinese. Good place for manufacturing.

i have both. everything is pretty much interchangeable except the fore grip.

the bluing on the 500 has more depth to it and the safety is different, but it's really the same gun. i like the maverick better. i carry it on patrol. it's been reliable and really held up well over the last 10 years. the 500 is my fancy bird gun.

MCgunner. I have handled one in the past and you are right....It only had one slide rail....But Wdldguy is also right, straight from the Maverick website, All models feature dual extractors and TWIN action slide bars for positive, non-binding extraction and ejection. For me that makes things alittle more attractive. maybe the new models have the twin action slide bars but I do know last years model didn't have 2 slide rails. Here is a little FYI...I have a 20 gauge Mossy model 500 from about 20 years ago with wood stock and forearm grip, it only has one slide rail....How about that:rolleyes:

Thanks

Thanks for all the responses. I like the Mossberg 500's and thought the Maverick would be an inexpensive way to get a new one. It appears
they are mostly the same with the exception of the safety being on the trigger on the Mav, so I won't get one as I like the thumb safety.

I had a Maverick 88 from the early 1990s with a single action bar, as was the case with older Mossberg 500s. Newer models of both have dual bars.

In 1988 Mossberg opened a plant in Torreon, Mexico, to make parts, which are then assembled across the border at the company's Eagle Pass, Texas, facility. I seem to recall the reason, at the time at least, was Mexico's restriction on the manufacture of firearms. Component parts, however, can be made, and with the cheaper labor costs south of the border, the Torreon plant is probably seeing more and more of Mossberg's production.

Mossberg has been marketing less expensive shotguns under the Maverick Arms name since 1989, shortly after the Torreon plant opened. The Maverick 88 uses the same stocks, barrels and some internal parts as the Mossberg 500, but as others have pointed out, uses a trigger guard mounted safety rather than a receiver mounted version like the 500.

An indication of how similar the two series may be is that Mossberg currently lists the Eagle Pass address for service on both the Model 500 and Maverick line.

Thanks for the explanations. I thought I was going nuts cause I definitely recall the Mavericks I looked at when they were first offered had the single action bar. Good to know it's not senility. :D

I much prefer a tang safety 'cause I shoot south paw. However, my Winchester 1400 has the cross bolt style safety and I get along with it. Given the choice, though, I'll pay a little more for a tang safety due to my south paw affliction. I'm actually right handed, but nearly blind in my right eye. If I could shoot right handed, the safety wouldn't be as big a deal.

I have a 1990/91 vintage Maverick 88...single bar.

Some of the older Mossy 500's also had single bars, while the newer manufactured Mossies & Mavericks have 2 bars.

The Mavericks have the safety on the trigger/guard assembly, while the Mossbergs have the safety up on top.

Now I have NOT tried this, but the theory is that you could swap the fire control groups around, and end up with a shotty with either 2 safety assemblies, or none. Again, I have NOT tested this theory, nor am I ever going to try it.

Mossy 500 & Maverick 88 barrels are interchangeable within guage and mag capacity.

I have an M88 smoothbore. Turned it into a Turkey gun with a vent-rib off a 500. These days I have a more dedicated bird gun but the old ugmo still takes deer and refuses to die. On a side note the m88 isn't tapped for a scope, but most any bracket mount for a 500 will fit `em too. the Weaver convert-a-mount does.
