What's the difference between the Maverick and the 500? I saw a Maverick on sale for $140ish at Wal Mart, wondering if it would be smarter to just pay $200 for the Mossberg 500 or $220 for the Remington 870 instead.

take my answer with a grain of salt, but i think the Mavericks are more of an SD gun, while the 500 is multi purpose.

My orginal post shows how bad my memory is,so I"m chaingig it a bit.:neener:

The Maverick line is not bad at all,I've shot a buddies' gun many hundreds of times,and he's shot it thousands of times. He's had it about 15 years and it still goes bang when called upon.
BUT if he'd had the money at the time He'd a bout an 870.:D

I have a Maverick 88 on layaway @ Academy $150 ($139 + TTL). It has dual action bars and the same screw-in chokes that the 500 Mossbergs use on a 28" vent rib barrel. The stock is polymer basic dark gray/black. The safety is mounted on the trigger gaurd not on the tang like the 500. The action is stiffer OOTB than a 500 but that can be worked out with CLP and a little elbow action:D .

All Mossberg shotguns made at least since the model 500 was introduced have aluminum receivers. They haven't made a steel receiver shotgun for many years.

The Maverick is essentially Mossberg's "super budget" gun, designed to sell at an absolute rock bottom price.

Major differences between it and the Model 500 are, it has the safety located in the trigger guard instead of on the receiver like the Model 500, and the action bar assembly is made as an integral part of the forearm.

As I recall, the Maverick is assembled in Eagle Pass Texas from parts made in Mexico.

The Mavericks have the same innerds and most parts are interchangable with Mossbergs;
the safety on the Maverick is built into the trigger housing while the safety on the Mossberg is on the top of the receiver near the tang;
Mavericks come with black synthetic furniture only;
Mossbergs can be had with black synthetic furniture, wood furniture, or camoflauge-painted synthetic furniture;
Mossbergs offer more combos' and variants while the Mavericks are more basic shotguns;
barrels & chokes may be used by both Mavericks and Mossberg 500s; Maverick is the authorized warranty provider for both the Mossbergs and
the Mavericks

hope this helps

Ok, I own an 870 Express 12 ga 3&1/2" w/ black synthetic furniture (to match my AR-15 and my Glock of course). I've fired Mossberg 500s & 590s and I honestly prefer them. I like the slicker and shorter stroke to cycle the action, and I prefer the tang mounted safety over the trigger guard mounted safety. My next pump gun will be a 500 or 590 ... if I ever get around to it. The 870 works great so I have no motivation to trade it nor buy a Mossberg right now. Get the shotgun that feels best in your hands.

SOME older Mavericks also have only one action slide vs. two on the mossberg.

Also i did not know that Mavericks used a crossbolt trigger assembly saftey vs thumb receiver on mossy

:scrutiny: I have an err.......special (" :evil: ") mossberg and the saftey is accessible, but it would be even cooler if it had it on the trigger assembly, does anyone know if i can just swap trigger assemblies?

I own a Mav88, for about 15 years now. Yeup the safty is in the trigger guard, and 500 barrels interchange. It's on the ugly side, but quite the workhorse. Front end has a rattle but no more then any new synthetic stock/grip 500 made today. Countering that I bought a 20ga 500 for my son its got a wooden stock/grip & doesn't rattle at all.

I prefer the safety on the 500. You have instant visual and feel for the safety. and if memory serves me the 500 has a 10
year warranty and the Mav is 1 or 2 years.
