Recently I traded for a Mossberg with an 835 Slugster barrel. When I got home I noticed the receiver was marked 500A. I didn't think you could put an 835 Slugster on a 500A. Can someone enlighten me on this? From what I've read I should not have this barrel on this action.

Does the barrel attach to the magazine tube with a screw or a cap? The standard 500 set-up is a screw that goes into the tube, while the 835 and 590 use a cap. To make things confusing, Mossberg sells a few 500 models with the newer cap design.

That is one of the things confusing me. It has the cap. That means I can put a mag extension on it right? Does that also mean I can use barrels with the cap? 590's and 835's?

590 receivers and barrels are basically the same as the 835 receiver and barrel.
Big difference is the 590 ejection port is not clearance cut for 3.5" shells and 590 barrels are not chambered for 3.5" shells.
Any 835 barrel will fit a 590 receiver with a five shot magazine but you cannot shoot 3.5" shells because they will not feed and eject properly.
Any 2 3/4" or 3" magnums will feed and eject.
A standard 835 barrel will not fit a 590 with the extended eight or nine shot magazine tubes.

You can mount a magazine extension on the five shot magazines of either the 835 or the 590.

Onmilo thanks. But what I'm asking is will 835's and 590's fit on my 500 with the cap barrel attachment? I'm assuming it will as there is an 835 slugster on it now. Shell size is not an issue as I will stick with 2 3/4" rounds.

A 500 with the cap style magazine tube would have to use 590 and 835 barrels. The 500 and 590 are the same receiver just different mag tubes. It crossed my mind that maybe someone replaced the original screw mag tube with a 590 style but that would be foolish since the 500s have the largest selection of barrels and are also cheaper.

Someone replaced your 500A mag tube and barrel with a set from an 835 as MAK said. It's no biggy. You didn't get shorted or anything.

If you want to use standard 500A barrels later on, you'll need to replace the mag tube with a standard 5+1.

Mag tube extensions work on the 835 mag tube, yeppers.

Barrels....you're limited to 835 barrels and a couple of specialty ones like the breacher barrel, the 590A1 18" six shot etc. Standard 590 8+1 barrels WON'T fit it.
