can i please get some information about the differences in barrels. I have a 500 with a 28" bird barrel, a 24" rifled slug barrel. And are currently in the process of bidding on a 18.25 ' barrel that is rifled. My main question is the bird barrel has chokes that are screwed into the end of the barrel. The slug barrel has no threads inside barrel. And the one i'm bidding on says that it is a rifled barrel with improved cylinder. Does that mean that it will have threads in it for the use of a choke?. I'm guessing that neither of these slug barrels are meant to have chokes screwed in, am i right....please help this ol pistol shooter, whose trying to train son in the great sport of shooting. Sorry for the novice question.

I would seriously doubt that a fully rifled barrel would then have a choke stuck in it. It would be like putting crutons on a cowpie.

thanks bear, as you can see my shotgun knowledge is very low. I will then assume that the barrel will be installed and slugs fired through it as it is. thanks for the info. Any other tips you might have would be greatly appreciated..

welder,

Rifled barrels will work best with sabot slugs. They are poor performers with shot loads, either bird or buck, and most Foster type slug loads do poorly in them too. Smoothbore barrels are either produced by the factory fitted for choke tubes, or you can have a barrel modified to take choke tubes by a gunsmith.

What did you have in mind doing with the 18.25" barrel? Could it be it is a smoothore and not rifled?

Stay safe,

Slugs...need info

Thanks for the update and info. I'm on kind of a steep learning curve. I did'nt win the auction for the barrel and have since decided not to bother with one. The 24" slug barrel actually handles my Advanced Technology flashlight mount and lines the end up close to the end of the barrel. I know you mentioned sabot slugs. Is this a type name or a brand name. What should i be looking for in the way of sabot ammo. Who manufactures this type of ammo, and what other package information should i be looking for.Was given a box of Aguila. Are these the correct type to be using. Sorry for all the questions, but i need to know these things. thanks.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sabot slugs have a lead slug with a plastic outside covering. I believe the term for this plastic enclosure is Sabot. The plastic covering(sabot) rides in the rifling grooves and falls free upon exiting the barrel, the enclosed slug heads for the target. The idea is for the rifling to impart a stabilizing spin to the slug, without touching the slug itself. With a smooth bore your standard lead (foster type) slug would be the best choice,it exits the barrel in the manner a blow gun dart would. Most ammo makers produce sabot and regular types of slugs,I've always heard good things about the Brenneke's brand slug.
