Mossberg shotguns reliable?

A:keep it at least 18.25" long for legal reasons

Measured from the face of the breech with the action closed. Where you get in trouble is measuring the barrel outside the action. Why bother? Get a spare barrel in the length you want.

I've got two Mossbergs, one manufactured sometime before 1967 (no serial number). I'm also a certified Remington armorer. Which one would I pick? For the price, a Mossberg. Not enough difference in quality and reliability to make up for the price diff.

I have a 500 and several friends own them. They're neither sleek nor sexy, but they're all kinds of durable.

You can usually find sales on them with both barrels included in one price.

They are very reliable in Pump configuration. You can by various barrel lengths for very reasonable prices and have a more marketable shotgun, but if you cut the barrel - then you have something less.

I bought a second factory barrel in cylinder bore for about $50 (18"). Then a 24" slugster with cantilever scope base on E bay (perfectly legal) for under $50. Now I have a "Mossberg Nest" with a barrel for varied activies. Consider it before you cut.

Then I guess my CCW instructor, NRA certified, was wrong when he told us that cutting a shotgun barrel, even if its still a "legal" length, was a federal offense.:neener:

My Mossberg pump shotgun experience is: no malfunctions of any kind, ever.

Push the safety, pull the trigger, boom. Rack the forearm, another boom. Empty? Yank back the action, throw a shell in the general direction of the port, close up, and guess what happens? Boom.

Gotta like the boom.

Check http://havlinsales.com/ for other barrel possiblities before breaking out the hacksaw.

No good reason to take a saw to either a 500 or 870 when you can pretty much buy any barrel length and/or configuration for $100 or less if you look around at gunshows, on-line, pawn shops or in even gunshops. (Hey, I'll give you $50 for the barrel that's got 3 inches of dust on it and has been here since the Carter Administration).

Or buy one of the Combo deals that has the two barrels that meets your needs. To quote Mrs Scout when the "Brown Truck of Happiness" arrived with my latest 500 barrel purchase: "Do you have to collect them all ???" :rolleyes:

Yes, they are reliable. I (we) own several 500's/88's. They are what I use for clay games and putting a wide variety protein on the table.

There's also one 12 ga 88/500 setup specifically for HD here at Festung Scout along with the two 20ga 500 Bantams that Mrs Scout and my daughter use for games/hunting but that they would arm themselves with to protect/defend themselves with, should the need arise.

I guess you could say that I bet my (and my family's) life on them.

Yep!!:neener::)

Well I got a Mossberg to break. It is the clubs 500C Bantam 20ga. I only found it when cleaning. The fireing pin rattled in the bolt. I've yet to take it to the smith, but I figure the fireing pin spring broke or wore out. It still kept on shooting though.:D
