I've seen them at Wally World and K-Mart for about $150. Are they sturdy and worth the money or should I pass? Also, are there aftermarket barrels and extended tube magazines?

I'd spring out an extra fifty for an 870 express. Sorry I just don't like aluminum receivers...

Having said that it will still protect you and yours. Don't know about the mag extension thing on a Maverick

I agree with our friend Romulus in theory, but IMO it isn't about the alloy vs steel arguement but instead a more basic good vs not so good arguement. The Maverick guns work, positively, but they are not anywhere near the equal of an 870. If you want a cheapie in the closet of your vacation cabin an 88 will be fine, if you want a quality firearm to last generations get an 870, 590, 835, BPS, 1300 etc.

Thanks for the input!

I handled the Maverick and honestly, it felt a little too light for a 12 gauge pump. I believe the trigger was a polymer as well. I'll probably spring for the extra $50-75 and get a Remington 870 or a Winchester 1300. Winchesters are about $200 or so locally at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Worth it, but....

American gun makers excel in making top quality pump guns that do not cost much. More crucial than the bottom line is ease of use, control ergonomics, and how it FEELS.

IMO, you should try out the Big Four(which includes 500 variants like this one) and get the one YOU find fits and feels best.

I favor 870s, but if I were armed with an 88, 500, 37 or 1300 I would still be well armed....

I have the Maverick 88 by Mossberg, and it does the job for me. I don't shoot 5K-10K rounds per year, probabaly more like 300-500.

The Maverick is what it is, an entry-level value-priced shotgun. If I shot a lot more, I would buy an 870. It is somewhat lighter than an 870, and recoil with my HD loads is, well....stout!!!!

However, that being said, my Maverick always goes BOOM! when I mash the trigger. And over the years, I have put as many ducks and geese on the table as my brothers....one with an 870 WingMaster, one with an 1100 Remmy.

{It kind of torques them off that I bag just as much game with my [at the time] $106 Maverick as they do with their several-hundred dollar Remmys}

Magazine Extensions won't work with the Maverick due to the design of the end cap and barrel screw. If you want more capacity, Maverick sells a full-magazine version that holds 7 rounds methinks.
