Mossy 500 Mariner

Hey guys, I'm new here, and love all types of firearms. Up here in Canada (oh don't hate me) I do alot of gopher hunting this time of year. I was using my 10/22 but I found some really good deals on 12 ga ammo.

Needless to say, I have been obliterating gophers with my mossberg 500 mariner. I noticed lately that it has been getting tougher to cycle the action (pump). I have cleaned and oiled the gun, in the last week and a half i have probably put 400 rounds through it.

Are mossbergs notorious for becoming stiff or binding on the ejection stroke of the pump?

I really want to help the farmers out by continuing to take care of all dem dere praire dawgs

did you put 400 rounds through it and then have trouble with the action stiffening? that happens some times with my 870 express.. I think once all the parts loosen up it will stop/

May I ask how you came up with a technique to obliterate gophers with a 500 Mariner? If you don't mind sharing your method, I mean.

It sounds like it would be fascinating to watch. I bet the ranchers and farmers are appreciative.

The baby gophers are out right now. They're not too bright. I will drop any gopher up to 35 yds with 7 1/2 shot. the closer they are, the more obliteration there is.

On an average day with the 10/22 i can get about 60 or 70 gophers, but with the 12 ga i killed about 120 last weekend.

This problem has not gone away either. It is sometimes extremely hard to eject the spent shell after firing. The action barely moves. as this is also my HD weapon, this sucks.

I was wanting a Mariner. Did you get yours fixed? Is that a common issue with the 590 Mariners aswell or just the 500's?

How do you clean it? Could be a chamber being dirty problem a few strokes with a good bronze bore brush and a good swabbing out should solve that. Are you using handloads I've had shot leak out of handloads and cause al kinds of problems in my shotguns. If you can find revelation gunslick I highly reccomend it for lubing action internals and slide rails to actually increase the smothness ofer time. Anyway the decrease in action movement is definitely abnormal it should just keep getting better.

found out something new today, it could be that screw that holds in the extractor bar in the reciever.

turns out mine had been crossthreaded by the previous owner and today mine completely came out, rendering the gun useless, I would strongly make sure its screwed in all the way before continuing to use the gun

I would assume this is a problem for all Mossberg 500/590s?

Anyhow, if you see my other thread read my followup on it.
