I've been given the word from the wife! I am now looking for a new semi-auto in .308. I need some opinions/facts for most accurrate out of the box. I already have a PTR91 and want something different for the collection. I'm staying with .308 because of the availibily of ammo. My budget is under 2000 for the rifle. We'll talk optics later.

How accurate are we talking? I have a springfield M1A, and I love it, but from what I hear in the service rifle competitions the AR style rifles are beating the M14 styles. If accuracy is all your concerned about I would probably go with the DPMS.

On a one-on-one basis, it is the shooter. However, when viewed as a larger group with one style of rifle consistently showing higher scores, it must be the rifle.

Of course, conversely, if you want to assume in every case it is the shooter, the question is easily answered that the best shooters it would seem choose the AR platform over the M1a.

ARs totally dominate service rifle. They are far easier to get to shoot accurately. I love my M1a, but my AR10 would shoot rings around it.

I am currently considering a DPMS SASS. Looks promising. I'll be shooting a friends next week.

my advice, if accuracy is the goal, is to look for a used palma rifle.

the alternative is a rem700 PSS, if you're looking for something blacker

No experience with the M1A, but I am very accurate with both optics and open sights on my LR-308. The only things I have added to it are the target pistol grip and a bi-pod.

Well since you've allready got a black semi in .308 maybe a Benelli R1 would round out your collection....

Doc,
Yours is the most convincing argument I've heard anywhere. I think the DPMS ap4 is where I'm headed. Now I just have to decide what optics.

General Geoff,
2k is without the optics. But, every dime I don't spend on the rifle is one more to be spent on the optics. Looking for a super rugged that will be adequate for 500yds.

That DPMS is wearing a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14X40 w/ AO.

The group is 3 shots, and was fired at 100 yards, from the bench

I must admit, for an autoloader, it is not shabby.

Way outside of the 2K ceiling, but a PSG-1!

Being one of the lucky few to have fired a PSG-1, they aren't all that accurate. For the price you could buy 5 completely tricked out AR-10Ts with decent glass, and every one would shoot as well or better than the HK. A buddy paid $14,000 for his complete PSG-1 several years ago - used.

I have not shot a AR-10, but I do understand that match versions of the rifle are very accurate.

I have shot tens of thousands of rounds through Match versions of M1'a's. These are superbly accurate, wonderfully reliable; match M1a's dominated the firing points at Camp Perry for years. My rear lugged M1a's just seem a tad more accurate than the non lugged versions, but it could all be that I am justifying the extra expense by thinking they are more accurate.

You cannot go wrong with a Match M1a.

I would recommend one of the LRB forged receivers. I was able to inspect one, it is a precisely built receiver. There is nothing wrong with a SA receiver, all my rifles are bulit on them, however the LRB is the only forged M1a receiver made, will be built in less quantities and will therefore command a collector’s premium when it goes out of production.

I have DPMS in .223 that is extremely accurate, I would think their .308's would be just as good.

I'd go for the Armalite. It's accuracy beats all my other 308's.
