Which .308 semi auto should I get? I am looking at a DSA58 and the PTR91. How does these compare? Also, please let me know if you are passionate about any other .308 semi autos. Thank you.

I'm partial to the “AR style” 308s if you want a semi. They have a wide variety of options. And if you don't like something, you can change it yourself. But be careful. If you get builditis, you can sink a lot of money in 'em.

Here's a good article on battle rifles with sections on both the FAL and HK-91, as well as other .308 semi-autos:

They're both excellent rifles and you really can't go wrong with either. I myself bought a FAL and I love it to pieces, but, if I had it to do all over again, after reading this article, I'd probably get the HK91.
Also, please let me know if you are passionate about any other .308 semi autos.

I like the M-14, also.

My choice would be a M1A / M14 clone, but only if you are going to use iron sights.

If you are going to use optics, I would go with an AR10 or an AR10 clone.

I just got out and shot my brand new SA58 yesterday.... Amazing rifle. Got my gas system tuned in and everything is working as it should. No quality issue after 200rds yesterday... though my shoulder is a little tender today.

The big debates over the two platforms you've mentioned usually boil down to ergonomics. Get your hands on them and see what happens.

Some people like the FAL more than the G3... they have their own pluses and minuses...

FAL mags are getting hard to find... prices are about $20 a mag and those are surplus or used mags.

G3 mags are about 7-10 for brand new aluminum mags.

I chose the FAL because it fit me better... I shot the PTR91 and hated it. Have a buddy who loves his...

Out of your two choices...the FAL for sure.

If you want to consider other 308 semi auto...make the Kel Tec RFB on your short list. Best 308 semi rifle that I have ever owned and I owned a few.

What kind of money are you talking about? I'm a big fan of my RRA LAR-8. but it's not made to lug around on a hunt if you're walking a lot. But from a deer blind, or just punching targets, I love it.

well, the hk series ,in my own opinion,is best, although i do own the m1a's.less problems with stock/handguard tension interfereing with accuracy, cheaper than an m1a,you can send the lower to williams trigger specialties to redo the trigger, and add a set trigger for some real fancy shooting,it's already adapted for easy bipod installation in the handguard, you can easily attach a surplus collapsible stock, which folds up nicely, scoping is easy also, mags are cheap.only prob all the rifles are heavy as hell for us old farts.
the ptr is available with match barrell for bout 900 wholesale.century arms, cdnnsports and sog have another shooter type version in the 500 dollar range wholesale.never tried one of them though.

For a rifle with optics as it's primary sighting system I prefer the CETME (HK, PTR) platform. For a rifle with irons as the primary sight system I prefer the FAL.

RRA

I really like my Rock River LAR 8. Shoots close to 1 moa with junk mil-spec surplus. Let alone what it does with match ammo

my next one will be a RRA LAR 8, dont know if I want a short or long barrel on it...hope I can get some input, I know my Bushmaster has a short barrel and you dont want to fire it without hearing protection....your ears are gonna ring for a long time

RedCent,

that's a nice looking rifle. Please post details on it.

sorry for thread hijack.:neener:

I suggest a converted Saiga .308, can get in the sub MOA with decent ammo. and alltogether costs less than just about any other .308.

"At 50 buck per extra magazine, the FNAR just doesn't make me smile..."

Most things in the gun world dont make me smile, price-wise, but that's not gonna stop me getting what I want.

Winchester Model 100 - the prices are going up every day. That way, you'll make some money when you sell and have a shooter in the meantime :)

Vanguard.45 and Brocluno,

I agree. I love my Winchester Model 100 in .308.
