Mythbusters was unable to sever a rope with a bullet as seen in the western movies. A bullet would not cut the rope but slide around it. Fishing line would be even tougher being smaller.

I still not believe it can be done and simply stating "yes it can" is not good enough. Prove it, Russ.

Hunterdad- Do I think line would roll off a bullet at 1200 FPS? Yes, I do. Doesn't matter how fast the projectile is going, the shape of the bullet would not allow it to "bite" the line and cut it.

I have some fishing line. Next time at the range I'll set it and try it. If I can cut the line I will acknowledge that I was wrong.

I asked around and several folks told me they have seen it done. They said the line must be stretched very tight so it can't wiggle. They also said that except for a couple of professional exhibition shooters it only happened by accident when shooting at targets hung by fishing line. Hitting fishing line by design is marksmanship beyond the ability of the average shooter.

So, I will accept that under ideal conditions if the bullet strikes the line it will cut it. But the one condition that was consistent in the stories is that the line was stretched absolutely taught. Any slack at all and it won't work.

I would still like to try it for myself.

I don't have any fishing line, so I used some thin Weed Eater line.

I do a good bit of timed point shooting, 5-7 yards, and was shooting a few minutes ago.
I hung the plastic line across the front of the target. The line was rather loose and about 3/4 inch in front of the target.
The gun is a Beretta 70S 22LR. The ammo is Federal Wal Mart 550 Bulk Pack.
I wasn't especially shooting at the string, just shooting for COM but about in the middle of the third magazine, about 20 rounds, a bullet hit the string and cut it.

The line was not "stretched absolutely taught", but just hanging.
I was going to stretch it tight but I thought I'd see what would happen if it was just hanging.
Apparently the bullet had no problem cutting it.

I may try it again later.

when i was a young'un my dad took us shooting all the time. He has a pretty good collection and we never knew what he was gonna bring until he unloaded the truck and laid them all out on the tailgate. one day he brought out the old musket. He had me go up a hill and place a milk jug way the hell up there. Dad proceeded to load that old gun as we all watched. from a standing position the old man fired and sure enough that jug blew apart. I was real proud of the old man that day, really impressed. He let me and my brother have a go at it. I hit the hill but not my intended target, my little brother got knocked to the ground by the recoil when he shot it. My dad taught me marksmanship, at a time when all I cared about was spraying .22 bullets from my ruger like the guys in the war movies. Now I teach my wife and daughter just as my dad taught me.

I've made a few of those shots myself, but we're supposed to be talking about others.

My Dad and I were heading out squirrel hunting when I was probably 10 or 11 years old. We were just passing a tree and a squirrel took of running across the trail in front of us. My Dad pulled his .22 Ruger single six and dropped him right in the middle of the trail. I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen!

Years later I asked my Dad about that shot. He said it was all he could do to keep from laughing at the time. That was the luckiest shot he'd ever made.
