What is the most common pistol caliber carbine by make and model?
I am thinking high point cause of cost

What is the most common bolt action rifle by make and model?
Winchest model 70?

What is the most common semi auto rifle (center fire) by make and model?
AR 15 or possibly AK clone?

Most common single shot shotgun? gonna have to say H&R kinda own this one

Probably a S&W Model 15

I'd say you're dead on. By make and model, probably Glock 17 or 22. Model only, prolly 1911

What is the most common pistol caliber carbine by make and model? I am thinking high point cause of cost

The high point hasn't been around that long. I would suspect model 94 variants own this one.

What is the most common bolt action rifle by make and model? Winchest model 70?

Or Remington 700. Tough call.

What is the most common semi auto rifle (center fire) by make and model?AR 15 or possibly AK clone?

Model only, AR-15. By make, probably Bushmaster.

Most common single shot shotgun? gonna have to say H&R kinda own this one

I dunno, there's alot of old Iver-Johnson's and Sears-branded singles out there.

Most common pump? probably remy 870 or mossberg 500

The 870 is the most prolific shotgun in the world, IIRC.

A couple more categories:

Most common Rimfire pistol? I suspect Ruger Mk I/II/III

Most common rimfire rifle? Marlin model 60, no question

What is the most common bolt action rifle by make and model?
Winchest model 70?

Mosin Nagant. At least 35 million that we know of, and maybe 10-15 million more in China that we dont have exact records for.

Probably a S&W Model 15
It would have to be the M&P, later known as the Model 10.
Relatively few Model 15 Combat Masterpieces were made in comparison to the Model 10 M&P.

The M&P / Model 10 M&P was made continuously from 1899 until the present day.
The Model 15 Combat Masterpiece was only made from 1949 till 1999.

Most common semi-auto pistol?
Might be the Ruger Standard .22 Auto is in the mix there somewhere.

And there is a heck of a lot of Ruger 10/22 rifles out there too!

This would have been a much easier question to answer 20 years ago. Way to many players and way to many models these days.

No doubt the 1911 auto pistol still rides high on the list of familiar guns, but today I would be hard pressed to figure out which company makes the most of them - I doubt it is Colt.

Double action revolvers in .38Spl & .357 magnum are still plentiful, but what once a S&W - Colt market, has a good deal of compition in Ruger & Taurus

AR-15's like the 1911's slipped way beyond the borders of the Colt factory.

Bottom line is there are some type guns that still continue to be popular, but many different manufactures and variations have come into play.

The S&W .38 M&P, in all its revisions, is the most produced handgun in history, hands down. No doubt there are now more "1911-type" pistols, but by a zillion different makers.

The AR-15 platform is the top selling centerfire rifle in the United States and has been for several years. There are more than 30 manufacturers producing them. I have read that the most common centerfire rifle model in terms of cumulative number sold in the USA is the SKS (I have seen a figure of seven million quoted) but can't cite a primary source for that, though the sales rate is way, way down now as prices have climbed into AK territory.

Back in the early 1990's, Ruger and Glock were top of centerfire pistol sales, but I'm not sure now. I suspect Glock is still high on the list.

I believe the Remington 870 leads the shotgun tally.

For price, shootability and pure fun you can't beat the pistol caliber High Point carbines and they are great truck guns too. Everytime I let someone shoot mine and tell them about liftime warrantee they go buy one.

bump this right back to the top. I can now tell the reason I asked this. A friend of mine has went to one of the larger game making companies and with an idea for a game. The idea was for a SHTF game where a man is on his way home from a business trip when suddenly a the apocalypse begins and he has to arm himself and learn to defend himself. He breaks into a pawn shop and steals a couple of guns, and tries to make it home to his family while fighting off lawless mobs of people. He upgrades after each engagement, and has to make decisions on what to carry do to weight and necessity. While also searching for food, shelter and ammo.

The Game company considered his idea for a while and then decided against it. He wanted me to try and find out what the most likely guns the players would run into around the country so he could make it realistic.

EDIT: DO NOT MAKE THIS A SHTF THREAD!!! I DO NOT WANT IT CLOSED!!! And yes I know a lone person on that kind of trip would probably not survive especially without any training etc etc. It was an idea for a game so nowhere near possible or realistic in those senses. Since the company rejected it I can talk about the minute details. He does intend on trying to market his idea to a couple more companies but that seems to be a while away.

1911 is not a brand, but rather a gun design that's implemented by many companies. Glock is a brand and a design. So, the mere fact that Glock is being compared to a gun design (1911) puts Glock at the top of the list for most popular handgun. :) An apples to apples comparison would be Glock 19 versus Colt .45 caliber 1911, or something like that. Anyway, whatever is "most common" is pure numbers, not an opinion.

I agree, but the Model 94 has been made for over 100 years... so, there are a LOT more of them out there then the 995.

The model 94 came in .32 right?

Pistol: Glock 19, more than likely maybe the 17.
Bolt Action Rifle: Winchester 70 in US, Mosin Nagant elsewhere.
Pump Shotgun: Remington 870
Semi-auto Shotgun: 11-87
Single Shot Shotgun: H&R
Bolt Shotgun: JC Higgins
Semi-auto rifle: Mini 14 in the US, Maybe the SKS. I doubt the AR15 or the AK47 reach a large enough crowd to make the list. In the world definitely the AK 47

If you were to assume TEOTWAKI what you'd find lying around is a whole bunch of different firearms. Finding a firearm would be pretty easy in most parts of the US. Finding a good supply of ammo, not so easy. Firearms last 100 years or more. They're the most durable of durable goods. Ammo tends to get used up quickly. So the question isn't really what firearms are common, but what ammo is in the most supply. And what reloading components. Factory made centerfire primers would become like bricks of solid gold.

Heck even with the recent shortages up here, I put an internet ad up for a brick of CCI's I wasn't using for full retail price and had someone at my door handing me cash inside of an hour. Dozens replied to the ad.
