Most popular- depends on who you ask~!

Most people will tell you COLT, and old Colt's are like good women
as they tend to last forever and a day withstanding abuse from
dirty old men.:uhoh: But, todays Colt's are not the same breed as the
old ones. :scrutiny:

With todays economy the way it is, I sell more Springfield G.I. models
than anything else. ;)

Yanno, I have an AO1911TC in stainless that is my second favorite ever, but I must be lucky, becuase #1 is an AMT Longslide that is apparently the only good they ever produced...

Neither has ever had a Malf that I don't blame on the ammo....

Ramone

I love what i am seeing. I new that the overall consensus would lean towards Colt but after i get all the numbers i will let everyone no what the overall score is.

I will also be wanting to know about accessories in part 2. Thanks all.

best bang for the buck STI Spartan made by Armscor(RIA)
Close, but no cigar.

STI is a custom builder that uses Armscor frames as a starting point for one of its models (not all of them), and they're priced considerable higher than a RIA or CD (completely made by Armscor).

Just a quick note. Charles Daly is no longer made by Armscor. They've switched over to Bul of Israel for the new production.
(Wonder if that'll make my Armscor one more valueable some day....hah not with my luck).

Close, but no cigar

OK JUST FOR YOU.........

they are made By armscor using sti parts

there is one in every crowd:rolleyes:

and they're priced considerable higher than a RIA or CD
Well $650 or so v/s $350 or so on the percentage level is considerable, but in real life its not a considerable diffrence to me.

Current production? Kimber by a long shot. You can't argue with production numbers.

In order of total pistols produced the top companies in 2006 (Most current statistics on the ATF website) are:

Smith and Wesson - 223,017
Sturm, Ruger and Company - 100,976
Kel Tec Industries - 82,727
SigArms - 75,089
Beretta USA - 74,791
Beemiller INC (Hi-Point) - 73,270
Kimber Man. - 60,618

Smith and Wesson produced the most but they sell many different models of firearms. The 1911 is certainly not the brunt of their production.
Sturm, Ruger and Company does not produce a 1911 clone.
Kel Tec does not produce a 1911 clone.
Sig Arms does produce a 1911 clone(GSR) but that isn't their bread and butter.
Beretta does not produce a 1911 clone.
Bemiller (Hi-Point) does not produce a 1911 clone.
Kimber only produces 1911 clones.

Now, if we are talking most popular of all time? That would be THE Colt .45 Automatic GI. Period. That is what the 1911 hysteria is based on. That single firearm. There is only one answer and JMB designed it.

That is my opinion anyway.

"they are made By armscor using sti parts"

No they're not.

"Unlike the pistols provided by some of its competitors, STI uses its own internal parts, and these are fitted at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Georgetown, Texas."

The review, linked on the STI site, says the frame, slide and barrel are made by Armscor, not the complete gun.

Huh.......Have a link for that?

Linked off the sti site is a Jan. 2008 Guns and ammo article.

It has the followingon page 35 far right ;
The slide frame and barrel are made by armscor in the Philippines. All other parts(execpt LPA sight) are made by STI, which ships them overseas; the guns are built by armscor then sent back to STI
see for your self http://media.stiguns.com/USPress/Comp1911-2008/Model1911-08_Spartan.pdf

Why would STI let guns and ammo print this if it wasn't true?

Never mind I found where you got that from(m1911.org). The parts are hand fitted by STI here in the US on a jig not the actual gun they are going in. That should clear it up for you.

A Colt is always the right answer!

Anyone have actual sales figures for recent year?

I'd bet Springfield, and perhaps even Kimber, handily outsells Colt these days.
With todays economy the way it is, I sell more Springfield G.I. models
than anything else

I understand that some companies may sell more product than Colt, but then again they sell more Honda's than BMW's. That does not make the Honda more popular! It is just what they settled for! :neener:

Best 1911... Rock River Arms!!!

"But, todays Colt's are not the same breed as the

Colt's newest endeavor, the return of the series 70 is certainly an outstanding choice especially for a build. I have two in consecutive numbers soon to arrive. Both of which will go to the one and only NOVAK for the build. I'm not rich by any means as I work for the state, however... this is something I wanted to do for a long time.
However, Rock River Arms builds a HELL OF A GUN! I'm surprised no one here has stated them.

With that in mind... I have a new slide coming from Kimber to replace my slide with an external extractor. TLE/RL II... you got a good price it's yours.

Dutch1911
All tac guys know, if it has reliant issues... it may as well be a door wedge.

Forgot..

One thing I forgot to mention...
Todays steel is by far of higher quality than the early era.
Tighter tolerances, and better quality control.
All things being even...

If you had a Fully loaded Rock River Arms and a new Colt series 70 with comparable build... I might toss in the wife and walk out with both.

Another vote for the STI Spartan as a excellent value in 1911s. Classic series 70 internals too.

As others already pointed out, the Spartan makes its price point by using an Armscor produced frame & slide and is then assembled by STI in Texas. My 9mm STI Trojan has over 10,000 rounds through it and I wouldn't give a second thought to recommending it.
