I just re-read the thread on most impractical guns.

So what is your most practical gun you own?

I do not hunt, never have wielded a weapon in self defense. All are equally fun to shoot for the most part.

I guess that leaves me with the Fly Shooter.

Flies live in fear of me because of it. Everyone ought to have one.

which is yours?

All of them. If I'm bird hunting either my 870 or M1S90. For deer, the M44. For paper/woodchucks the .22 mag. For HD the 870.

For other deer seasons I have an Omega(and very proud too).

Probably Remington 870. I can get screw in chokes that will let me hunt any game you can think of or play all kinds of shooting games (skeet, trap, clays).

Maybe S&W M66 4" .357 but it's not really mine anymore- the wife has kind of taken it over since about '92...

"Most practical gun" is limited to what the situation calls for. That's like picking a "most practical tool" from my garage. Sure I've got my favorites, but singling out one as the most practical is a little tough without knowing what it's supposed to be practical for.

I almost listed my 12ga over 7X57R as my most impractical, but the more I thought about it the more practical it is. Probably the most versatile out of the box firearm I own.

Mossberg 500

I have to vote for my Mossberg. I bought it for $225 brand new with 2 barrels. 1 24 in barrel rifled and 1 18.5 for SD. Good for everything!

I love the old shotty, but as for practical I have to go with one of my .22s my little Marlin 60s or my 10/22s. Best guns for the money. Easy to use, cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, good for just about anything and everything.

Most practical :
Deer - Browning Stainless Stalker A-Bolt 30/06 Leupold 3.5x10x50 scope
Doves and Quail - Browning A-5 Light 12, 26" barrel
Turkey - Browning A-5 magnum 12 , 28" barrel
Squirrels - either my 10/22 sporter or Marlin 39A
Plinking - Ruger MKll 5.5" bull barrel stainless or Colt Woodsman
Protection and Carry - Glock 19

Most practical to me means it has to hunt, be a defense weapon, and be carry/concealable.

It's a toss-up between my Ruger .357 and one of the Delta 10mms.

Puma 1892 in .45 Colt

Plinking, self defense, short range big game hunting. It's easy to carry and fits the bill for more applications than any other firearm I own.

Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum w/ 3" barrel.

Stout enough to handle the hottest .357 loads, can download it to mouse-fart .38 special levels in order to take squirrels or other small game, also can be loaded with snake-shot for pest defense, hard-cast 180-200gr bullets for bear defense, and any good 125-158gr hollowpoints for self-defense.

The gun is also stainless for easy cleaning/corrosion resistance, small enough to be concealed on a belt easily, and has fixed sights and modular disassembly for reliability out in the field. Still has a 3" barrel which gives better sight radius and more velocity than a snub-nose, but short enough to not get in the way of CCW.

I'm pretty sure it's my favorite gun right now. (But don't let my Swedish Mausers hear that! The old gals might get upset. ;) )

I like my Ruger Mark II, Ruger Single Six and Browning Buck Mark because they are cheap to shoot. I can have a great time at the range for a few $$ in ammo so that is practical to me. :D I can't wait to get a clone Colt 1911 and my highly coveted Glock 19 9mm. If I learn to do reloads, those might be practical too. :)

I think there are four firearms that no battery is complete without.

1) A 12 gauge shotgun;
2) a 22 LR rifle;
3) a concealable handgun in a defensive caliber;
4) a rifle in a defensive caliber.

It's hard to say which of those categories is more practical than the others, but if I was limited to only one gun I'd keep the .22.

Only one? Boy, that would be a tough choice. If I had to go through my safe and pick only one favorite, it would be my S&W Model 35 .22/32 Target revolver. Plenty useful for small game hunting, accurate enough for serious target shooting, probably useful for HD with the right ammo (CCI Stingers), and a fun plinker that you can shoot all day for a few bucks. What's not to like about that?

Give me a 12 gauge shotgun and give my buddy a .22 rifle, and we'll stay fed and protected all the live-long day.

Believe it or not, my Savage .17 HMR. It's the most used gun around this house for practical purposes. I snipe rock squirrels off the porch with it almost every summer weekend.

The last three weekends, five shots, four squirrels.

Other than the 3 impractical guns I posted in the other thread, all of mine are practical.

I have a few rifles for hunting, a couple for defense. I have a shotgun for hunting, and a shotgun for defense. I have handguns for defense, IDPA, but need a couple for hunting.

If I had to pick one, it would probably me a Glock 17. It can be used for CCW, it can be used for home defense, and it can be used for IDPA. Since I have more than one of them, I have my bases covered.

Most Practical

For me, that would be the following:

A) Plinking/Target Shooting
Browning Buckmark
Les Baer TRS .45 ACP
6" six-shot Smith & Wesson 686-5*

B) Self Defense
Remington 12 gague 870 Marine Magnum*
Colt M4A3 .223*
West German .45 caliber SIG-SAUER P220A*
West German 9m/m SIG-SAUER P228
Smith & Wesson model 39-2 9m/m
KEL-TEC P3AT .380

*FootNote- indicates that these weapons also serve a dual role as home D'
weapons.

Long gun: Mossberg 500 12 gauge. The interchangable barrels make it totally practical for big game, small game, and self defense. Great package.

Hand gun: Much as I like semi-autos, I'd have to go with a 4" Ruger GP100. Again, big enough to hunt with, great for self defense, and can plink all day with .38 specials.

hmmm, tough call

.32 1903 probably will be doing it's main job for at least another half century for me if I'm lucky. Hey it' been hammering away since 1910. whats another century?:what:

but the M1 carbine probably is a better 'multi tool' hunt, stand guard and spit lots of lead. (spend most of life in gun safe between range trips)
