Most practical gun

It Depends

Sorry.

As someone else already said, that's akin to asking "what's the best tool."

For what?

In my current situation, right now, today, I could argue that the most practical gun I own is one I've never even fired: the S&W 586-7 (.357 mag, 4" barrel).

The only reason I say that is that I can think of more applications for it (in my current circumstances) than I can for the others. I could plink, hunt, or defend myself with it. It has, arguably, the broadest range of available loads of anything I own. In a pinch, it can be worn under a coat.

However, if you told me, "hey, we're expecting trouble in the neighborhood tomorrow and we need you on the line with us," that's not what I'd grab. In that context, suddenly my M1 Carbine is all kinds of practical.

The Marlin 1894C might stand well in that same situation, but not for any protracted engagement.

If I moved up the hill a couple of miles, I might suddenly find one of the 10/22s very useful. Place is rotten with fuzzy rodents.

So, yeah, it depends.

Kind of in the same way that the tool of the moment depends on the job at hand.

I'll take the 12 gauge and 357 magnum

Handgun = my Taurus Tracker 357 magnum : I can hunt deer with it in a pinch, its a good self defense gun, the cartridge is a proven manstopper, I can load bullets from 110 grains to 200 grains, soft points, hollowpoints, hard cast, fmj's, you name it, the 357 will do it.:D I can plink with 38's as well.

Long gun = Mossberg 500 12 gauge. I too bought the package with 2 barrels, one 28 inch, one 18.5 inch, from Big 5 for $210 out the door.:D For that money, the Mossberg is a great weapon and will stop just about any animal in its tracks, with 3 inch magnum slugs at short range. Its devastating against human predators and it makes a good hunting weapon as well. A 12 gauge shotty is very versatile, just like the 357.:D These are my two choices.

I think that is hard to beat a good shotgun and .357 revolver. An 870 and S&W 686 for me. Not necessarily my favorite guns, but definately the most practical.

I've said it before , and I'll say it again, it is double tough to beat a long bbl pistol, semi auto , in 22lr or 22mag, holding 10 or more rounds, for fun, sport, food, and defense, and allways very light and easy to carry. Plus, this is about the only thing which most people, if they had to bug out, could actually carry on them , a couple thousand rounds at one time.

Depends on the task at hand:

Day to day self defense while out: Handgun (for me, a Glock)

Home defense: 12 Gauge Pump (for me, Mossy 500)

Getting food on the table in a TEOTWAWKI scenario: Rifle (for me, AR15)

These kind of questions are kind of nonsensical, really. Some of us must be getting bored. But, I'll admit, they do make more sense then the "What kind of gun do you need if suddenly attacked by man eating Zombie" threads.

The 12-gauge shotty, the gun that really won the west. Can bring game as light as dove or as large as elk home for the pot.

The most practical? Hmm.

After much deliberation I'd have to give the nod to my Thompson Center .22 Classic rifle. It's exremely accurate (less than 1 MOA), dependable, deadly against anything I'd care to shoot at and I can carry it plus a thousand rounds of ammo all day, every day, for weeks on end.

I think this has been a fun thread. What is most practical is left up to anybodies interpretation. My most practical was a freakin flyswatter gun.

Now if the Zombies are coming I want a shotgun with salt filled shells. Everyone knows zombies can't handle salt.
