What is your most trusted .45 ammo? I currently carry Cor Bon Pow'R Ball .45 Auto +P 165gr. I am thinking of Hornady TAP in 200gr.

What do you trust?
 
Ya know, I've never had any decent-to-premium .45ACP ammo ever fail on me. Been shooting .45s for 20+ years.

I think I trust all premium SD Ammo. If it doesn't go 'bang', I would go into clear malf. mode.
 
Winchester whitebox 230 gr for practice, 230 gr hydra-shoks for carry, mostly because they are the ones I have test-fired in my pistol. I would gladly try similar offerings from Corbon, or the newer generation ammo from Federal as well.

My 1911 is full size, smaller bullets are usually intended for shorter barrel pistols.
 
Any name brand HP that feeds 100% in my gun. That said, I am partial to Hornady's XTP, Speer's Gold Dot and Federal's HST.
 
.45's are all I carry anymore. I run 50 each Golden Sabers, Gold Dots, SXTs, and Hydra Shoks through any gun that may get carried. The round that performs best out of that gun from an accuracy standpoint gets reliability tested for another 200 before it will get carried.
 
I know I should carry a slightly lighter load in my short barrel pistol. But I find it odd to carry a .45 that is lighter than a usual .40 S&W. I am looking for a good 185gr to 200gr tops. Any recommendations?
 
This is in all of my 1911 from compact to 5"

Cartridge : 45ACP +P 185 grain Cor-Bon DPX

Firearm : Recoil-operated handgun with 5.0" barrel length

Calibration : All depths corrected (From 9.8cm @ 608 ft/sec)

Shot 1 - Penetrated 15.3” and exited the back of the block. 0.613” average diameter. Impact velocity was 1057 ft/sec.

Shot 2 - Penetrated 15.3” and exited the back of the block. 0.603” average diameter. Impact velocity was 1031 ft/sec.

Shot 3 - Penetrated 15.3” and exited the back of the block. 0.608” average diameter. Impact velocity was 1048 ft/sec.

Shot 4 - Penetrated 15.3” and exited the back of the block. 0.577” average diameter. Impact velocity was 1063 ft/sec.

Shot 5 - Penetrated 11.9” and exited the side of the block. Bullet was not recovered. Impact velocity was 1051 ft/sec.

I prefer federal hydra shocks 230 grain I tried hornady xtp 230 grains but after the second time they were chambered in my 1911 the bullets pushed back into the case but I have never had any trouble from federal
 
Thanks for the data Micheal T. I was actually considering the DPX. They performed well in my 9mm. That may be what I go with, but I am really interested in the Hornady TAP FPD ammo.
 
I only had one problem with fresh factory .45 ACP ammo in nearly 40 years of shooting it.
American (NOT American Eagle) ammo was poorly assembled, failed to fire several times, is pretty much junk IMO. Don't know if they are still around.
I have never had a problem with anything else, even Blazer or other "bargain" ammo.

I carry Remington JHP's or hardball, ball ammo in the short barrel 1911 and the revolvers.

As stated above, I've never had any problems with major brands...but I carry 230gr rem gs's in my .45s
 
Any of the major brands should work well (but always do your own reliability testing). I like the Federal HST and you don't have to take out a second mortgage to buy enough to practice with like with the amazing DPX stuff from CorBon.
