Norma Magnums - 308 Norma Mag, 358 Norma Mag, the first short mags?

Kudos to he who mentioned 300 Savage, but 308 and 30-06 killed it. The Savage's neck is too short. My friend has a beautiful Savage lever action that was his dad's. He is in his 60's so the rifle must be pretty old. He said it was very popular deer family hunting rifle. Lever action was great.

+1 on 257 .Roberts, when I see discussions of replacing .223 in military rifle and 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .260 Rem were tested/recommended replacements, I thought of the .257 Roberts. Maybe one based on 257 Roberts, but high pressure like other military ammo. .243 Win and 6mm Rem killed the .250 Savage and .257 Roberts. Kudos to Ruger for bringing it back.

7x57, 8x57 - These are great. German marksmen competed with 8mm in 1000 yard competition. 8mm has high B.C. They are military ammo, so are efficient, or provide high energy per grain of powder. Hard to find brass for my brother 8mm. But Hornady, Norma, Nosler, Speer, Sierra make some fine bullets. 125gr, 150gr, 185gr, 196gr, 200gr, and 220gr. I've been reading Handloader Journal for 2 years (so I know everything ROFL) and March issues, last 2 years running, had 7x57 articles. They had some great loads tested in their Sisk test gun.

260, 7mm-08 - great hunting rounds. When I was having issues with my 7mm Mag, I came really close to getting a 700 B&C. Beautiful guns, and I don't even like fluted barrels. ha!

35 Whelen - Only seen one guy hunt with this, but a .357 cal with 30-06 case sounds like a fantastic hunting cartridge. Load pistol bullets with SR 4759for plinking. Right on.

284 Win -

6.5x55 -

another vote for .358 Win. I would love to find a few choices on the shelves when I go to buy ammo. For now though, fire formed 308s and expensive new brass will have to do...

22lr for this reason

My 10 year old grandson shot my 22's for the first time last week. He has had a pellet gun for some time. I got out the 10/22, then the old stand by that was handed down to me from my dad. Of course I had to tell him the stories of all the squirrels and raccoon I had taken with that old gun and how well it shoots because it has been taken care of for over 60years. We shot over 2 boxes. To him..... he was Wyatt Earp, John Wayne in true grit. He commented how much recoil he took... I could only laugh and think back to the first time my Dad handed me the 22 in the woods and said, you see him you shoot him. And moments later my first squirrel fell from the top of a tree. Take a kid shooting... it will last a life time.
