With the Glock 22 in .40 reigning supreme in American police duty holsters, having largely supplanted the Smith Model 10s, 19s, etc. of a generation before, I'm curious if anyone would like to share any unique or unusual firearms they've seen their local police use (or that they themselves have used if in LE). (And, for what it's worth, I ain't knockin' the Glocks or Smith wheelguns - they're darn good guns in their own right!)

When my father was a sheriff's deputy and later a police officer in the late sixties / early seventies, he was issued some variety of S&W .38 Special revolver (most notably a Model 15). I grew up as police sidearms began to transition to the semi-auto. I got to "officially" carry one myself years later during a short stint as a reserve deputy sheriff.

Where I live (Central AL), most departments appear to require their personnel to supply their own handgun. Glocks, of course, are the most common, but sometimes a glimpse of something different is seen..to whit:

* Various N-Frame Smiths in the duty rigs of some county courthouse security personnel, usually in 4-inch trim...once saw what looked like a 6-inch N-Frame riding on the belt of a local deputy.

* On the hip of what I *think* was a Birmingham PD officer, a Smith semi-auto (possibly a grand old Model 59) with, of all things, an American flag decal near the backstrap of the grip.

* A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy packing a 1911 with faux pearl / ivory / other white-colored-material grips and a compensator that protruded from his open-bottomed duty rig. Though this was the first and only time I've seen someone carrying a compensated 1911 as a duty gun, a part of me always cheers when I notice a cop with Ol' Slabsides, as it's one of my favorites!

* Sometimes a Ruger semi-auto. When I was doing the reserve thing, I carried a P95...a good gun, but pretty off-beat as any kind of duty weapon around here. I once saw a sheriff's sergeant packing a P90.

Any others? This is all just for kicks, just something I was thinking about the other day while getting ready to head out the door...

Our security chief at school carries a sigma. I dunno why. Another officer has a really neat SS Colt 1911 with stag grips.

One of the local cops carries a SW 1911sc.

Not LE, but I've seen some strange decisions made by armed private security guards here in TN. A friend of mine is a TN state certified handgun carry permit and private security guard instructor, and owns his own gunshop/range/school. I'm in the process of becoming a carry permit instructor myself, so he has been allowing me to sit in on some of his classes, in order to learn from him how to do them. He's also allowing me to teach some of his classes, in order to gain some experience. Right now, until my certification comes in, it's sort of an apprenticeship. Once I get certified, he'll start paying me to teach.

Anyways, last week, we had a student come in to qualify as an armed, private security guard, and shot a Hi-Point .380. Now, in TN, a security guard is only allowed to carry the same action & caliber that he uses to qualify. They can go back and requalify with another weapon, but they have to sit through a four hour class period and reshoot with the new weapon. They can qualify with multiple weapons the first time, and the instructor doesn't usually charge the full amount of a seperate requalification. So, this guy is out on the street, guarding some business/apartment building/Federal Court, with a Hi-Point .380.

I am a Police Officer in rural Arkansas in the area I work we have to provide our own weapons. I am also a firearms instructor for law enforcement. I personally carry a Smith and Wesson 625 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt. I have carried 1911's, Glocks, Rugers, S&W's and Sig. I have also seen everything in Officers holsters. One of the most unusual things I remember was a plain clothes officer carring a Smith and Wesson 36 in 38 S&W and a Reserve officer with a Desert Eagle 357 Mag. I also teach Concealed Carry here and the assortment is vast. As for back up firearms I know an Officer (Full Time) who carries a Remington Double Derrenger in 41.

I think that many of the officers where I used to live use various 1911 models, which is cool to see.

While not an odd firearm, I did find it strange that the "rent-a-guards" at the local grocery store had Glocks. Fully armed guards, at the supermarket.

Yeah, I'm glad I don't live there anymore...

As a stock tech/checker at a local grocery, I saw a female armored car guard with a holstered .410 Snake Charmer:what: . It did not seem to bother her any.

I saw an episode of Insomniac with Dave Attell (man, I thought that was a great show, that and The Man Show). He was in New Orleans doing a show, and hooked up with some SWAT sniper guys doing "training". They were riding around town, following the bank of the canal, in the bed of a pick-up with lawn chairs and suppressed .22s hunting Nutria. One had a suppressed Ruger, the other a bolt gun I couldn't get a close look at.

I had heard of an officer in the rural N.C. Appalachias carrying a Colt Peacemaker as late as the 80's.

Weren't High Standard 10B's issued to some PDs back in the early '70s, before people realized how bad they were? Can't get much stranger than that.

While most of us here are issued Glock 22, Rem870, and AR-15s, there are some special teams that get FN P90's, and I'm referring to street units, not SWAT. Most SWAT around here use AR-15s, with my county using HK G36's...

I have heard stories in various publications of NAA .22 MINIS being used for NARCOTICS undercover jobs.

One of my friends who is a local LEO carries a Colt Delta Elite...and a custom 10mm derringer.

I have heard stories in various publications of NAA .22 MINIS being used for NARCOTICS undercover jobs.

I KNOW that is true..another lifelong friend was undercover for 5 years...he carried 6(!!!) guns on his person during working hours...and the deepest one was a NAA .22 SHORT!!! He called it his "Nostril Gun" as in stick it in the perp's nostril and squeeze. He had it where he could palm it in about 2 seconds.

One of the local PD's where I live used to issue S&W 1006's (10mm) to their officers. I think they switched now, but I am not sure to what.

Yeah I loved Insomniac. I was bummed when it was cancelled and of course my favprite episode was when the Jefferson Parish Sherrifs Dept was doing drive bys on Nutria! hehe! Oh and there are some agencies in Houston and surrounding areas with some really exotic(for PD's) weapons!

At least one small town department here in NM issues 1911s.

About half the State Police carries them, and many other folks in uniform.

Unique was a 4" S&W model 25 in .45LC, though APD was not happy with that choice of caliber.;)

I saw the Ennis County Sheriff packing a Colt SAA while he was at the local Dairy Queen with his family, this was fairly recent[2001].

I once chuckled when I saw the armored car guards packing Sig P226s, on gun belts that had a half dozen individual .357 magnum cartridges in bullet loops.

:scrutiny:

I sure hope they knew they didn't fit.
