I've got a stainless barrel, it's kind of matte, and I was thinking to polish it to shine with Mothers Mag & Aluminum. I probably not going to make it mirror shine, but just a little shine from the dull matte stainless finish. Is this going to affect tolerance, specially for reliability?

If Mothers is anything like Nevr-Dull (my favorite) it's non-abrasive and works by chemical action only. I'm not sure how much it will change your finish as opposed to cleaning it. One way or the other I can't imagine that material loss will be an issue. You might find Flitz to be a bit more effective at altering the finish as it's mildly abrasive.

I've heard of a lot of people polishing their guns with Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. Personally, I've used Flitz with good results. But for what you're talking about, you won't see any change in tolerance or reliability. You're just doing a cosmetic change. No cause for concern...

Mothers is a very mild abrasive, as is Simichrome. Have never seen Flitz, however.

I have used Mothers on my SS revolvers with great effect. Slow and easy, generally while watching TV.

Good to know about Mothers being abrasive. I've used Simichrome (and prefer it to Flitz) but it seems to be more difficult to get, at least where I have lived. Nevr-Dull is great if you want to avoid abrasives.

Mothers Mag Polish does a great job for a high shine. Quick too. Did this in one evening with an old wash cloth.

I used a greenie pad followed by a bunch of Mother's treatments on my 686. Looks good to me...

Same thing on my old Mini 30...

Mothers is great stuff. Works on knives also, Put a little on some cardboard and polish out the bevel to razor sharp

Yup, the old Scotch Brite greenie pad can do remarkable things. With a practiced hand you can get pretty close to any factory finish that you could want. I also read that Ruger says that the gray pad can be used to approximate a Ruger satin finish. I've never been able to find the gray pads.

I used it on my SP101 and it does good work with minimal effort.

The pics from my cheap digital camera doesn't do it justice.
