So a buddy of mine just got his CHL and is no dummy to guns but it is not is primary hobby so occasionally he calls me up with questions. Tonight at dinner he asked one I don't even have a clue on where to start. He is a pretty small guys (tall and thin) most of his daily dress is suit and tie, so we started talking about method of carry. I recommended either OWB or a shoulder rig. He was not receptive to either he is pretty set on packing in the small of the back. I mentioned that from what I know back is considerably slower to draw from, he was ok with that.

He then brought up that he would rather something actually higher up on his back not at waistband level, my only known option for something like that was a belly band. Do any of you have other ideas?

One of the guys at dinner mentioned something about a holster that was used in the movie face off but I did not know what he was talking about and frankly I don't thing movies should ever be used as equipment references but its something to provide a mental picture.

I meant to add the gun he carries is S&W 4506

Rhome = great custom holster maker. I would recommend your friend get in touch with him live if possible, and discuss his options, at the end of which, Rhome will custom make a holster best suited for his needs. I also dress in a suit, if not a dress shirt, tie, slacks daily, and am still able to carry a full size 1911 .45acp CONCEALED thanx to Rhome's holsters :D
Good luck.

Carry over the spine is a very bad idea, because if you fall down (or are knocked over in a confrontation) the gun can easily break your back. It's happened several times. There's better ways to carry.

One of the guys at dinner mentioned something about a holster that was used in the movie face off ...

It just so happens Bill Brown of Tombstone was asked to make a rig just like that for one of his customers. Most of his work is done via mail, phone, or internet order. In this case, the customer e-mailed him a screen cap of the rig in question which gave Bill the info he needed to craft the holsters to the customer's specs.

Custom work does not come cheap, but if you want it you probably think it is worth the cost. Here is the link to Bill Brown's shop:

(an acquaintance, but no financial interest on my part; just happened to see him working on the rig in question and asked him what it was about)

I just got hooked up with Bob Mernickle (google it)....ordered an OWB for my snubbie (holster model ps-4) that is just beyond compare. Price was reasonable, and turn-around time and service was awesome. Less than a month. His belts are dandy as well. Check him out.

I believe the holster from Face-Off is a Mitch Rosen. Great holsters. I have several and they are worth every penny.
