Mounting a scope on a Ruger No. 1

Recently got a Ruger No. 1 in 45/70 and I would like to mount a scope on it. It has the factory quarter rib. I have read on here that due to the mounting location on the Ruger the eye relief is a problem.

Can anyone give me a recommendation on a good mid-quality scope for 100 yd target with the proper eye relief?

What kind of mounting rings fit the Ruger quarter rib. It has the half moon grooves in the quarter rib which are unlike what I have seen before.

Nikon Omega . It is commonly thought of as a scope for black powder rifles, but it has a more generous eye relief then any other moderately priced scope I have found.

I was having the same problem with my Ruger #1b in a 30-06. Now I have an Omega 3X9X40 sitting on top and that affords me about an extra inch of eye relief over comparable models.

I wound up having to use an Leupold extension ring on my quarter rib using a 30mm Swarovski to get the correct eye relief.

i use Burris fullfield II scopes. I have a 4.5x14x42 on one and a 3x9x40 on the other with no problems.

I had eye relief issues also, put on a 4X Burris extended eye relief scope. It's not my favorite scope -- I like a bit more power and a larger objective, but the eye relief issue is solved.

I was unaware that there were problems putting scores on #1s.

I have scoped all three of mine and they seem to work fine.

To be fair, the #1 puts the scope rings pretty far forward on the action due to the falling block design pushing the rear ring forward over the chamber. Most folk either wind up using a scope with a really long body or using extended rings.

I like the Leupold low rings because they give me the proper cheekweld, but sadly they are not offered in an extended version. I wound up using the Leupold low rings and mounting a Leupold FXII 2.5x scout scope on mine, and it works well. In fact, I think that it works dang well, not just well.

Those are Ruger's proprietary rings, which combine the base and ring into one piece. They're a clever design, with the principal drawback of being pricy and having a secondary drawback of not being as well-supported by the ring manufacturers as, say, the Weaver cross-slot design.

I put a Simmons 4x shotgun scope on my #1 in .45-70 for now. It offers about 4" of eye relief, which is almost enough for me. If I had left the factory stock on, it would probably work fine, but I restocked it with a longer buttstock, as I am tall and wanted a longer length of pull. Ruger does sell some rings with a 1/2" offset to fit their bases, but easy and visible access to the rear of the chamber is compromised the more the scope sits back from the rear of the receiver. That's a problem for some, not so much for others. The 4x works well for the shots I am going to take with it, and the bottom tip of the diamond reticle actually works as a "ballistic plex" crosshair for holdover @ 200 yards while the central crosshair is zeroed at 100 yards (at least @ blackpowder velocities). For a cheap scope, it has held up well to some of the heavier loads one can load for a #1.

The Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm is a great scope for moderate range heavy cartridges IMO. It affords good eye relief, reliability, excellent reticle and finish choices as well as good glass...but it comes at a fairly high cost. For a little less (actually a whole lot less) the discontinued, but still available, Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5x20mm is a great alternative but the eye relief and glass quality isn't quite as good.

midway has leupold extended ring mounts. pricey! you can go with plain "weaver" style mounts for cheaper, also at midway.

I solved the eye relief problem on a #1 by using Ruger extension rings fore and aft and a Sightron 3x-9x scope.
Many rifles purchased today sport a rather long 14&1/2" length of pull which dosen't help the eye relief problem.
Not so with any of my #1's rhat measure 13&1/2".

all my #1s have luepolds on them because they do have a bit more eye relief then most other scopes. My 4570 has a varix111 1.5x5 and it works great but for a bit less money a vx1 or vx2 1x4 would work great too.

I have, or have had, scopes (Mostly Leupolds)on all my No1's (6) and never had a problem, and never even heard of a problem until now. I guess some people manage to find a problem even when there isn't one, especially in shooting forums.

So it sounds like a long eye relief scope, probably a Leupold variable, 20mm tube diameter with low (or medium), standard (non offset) rings will do the trick.

You got it; but it is a 1in. tube with a 20mm objective diameter. Also, stay away from the Rifleman and VX-I, as they are an inferior product; anything VX-II and above should do nicely.
