Made a trade today and got a Ruger Number 1 in 25-06. From the serial number it looks to be made in 2006. ( !34-15154) It looks to have a 23 1/8 inch barrel. At the breach, the barrel measures about 1.160 and tapers to .755 at the muzzle. It has scope mount blocks for the Ruger bases and rings instead of the quarter rib. Ahead of the scope mount blocks are two "filler screws" like those used for mounting a rear sight, but no such place to mount a front sight. The wood is unremarkable but better than usually found on say a Model 77 or 1022 LOL. It says No.1 on top of the front of the receiver. Rifle looks new, crown appears to be an awesome target crown. Which model have I described? I've never owned one before, never shot one even. That will all change tomorrow though.

The phrase I hear most with #1 rifles is "they either shoot, or they don't". I had a #1 in .357 magnum that patterned rather than grouped. I have one in .223 which is a decent shooter, it's not great but I didn't buy it to try and win matches. Plus I have yet to play with handloads. I hope yours puts 'em all in one hole :)

Mine is a 25-06 #1V with the bull barrel and it measures .753" at the muzzle. The barrel is considerably thicker at the action than at the muzzle but I can't measure it at the action unless I pull the forestock and I don't want to do that. It has the stepped or recessed target crown. The #1V should have both scope mounts on the barrel, not straddling the barrel and receiver. If you have the #1V you will need the Ruger scope mounts. The front scope mount base is slightly thicker than the rear mount base to offset the taper in the barrel. The #1V will also have a wide forestock suitable for shooting rests.

Wonderfully accurate gun with my handloads, never fired any factory rounds in it. I put some .060" high pressure gasket material at the front and rear contact points where the forestock touches the barrel and the action. It seems to have eliminated random contacts and the gun shoots very consistent.

Not the best picture but this is mine.

Can you post a picture?

This is what the gun is capable of. This was at 200 yards, one shot each, Ruger #1V 25-06 and CZ 550 243. If you look closely you will see the difference in the size of the holes. The beer bet was I couldn't place two holes in the same cap with one shot from each gun and not have the holes touch. I didn't buy any beer that day.

At least it wasn't a Molsons eh... ;)

I had a Ruger #1 International with full Manlicher stock in 7x57. I loved the caliber but couldn’t get it to shoot with any factory or handloads better than 5”. I sent it back to Ruger, they said it was a burr on the crown, repaired it and sent it back. I went through the same factory and hand loads and couldn’t get it to shoot better than 6”. We parted company. I chalked it up to a bad rifle and a learning experience. I hope yours does better.
