Move to Illinois

Hoops of fire? Really? It's a class and an application. Sure doesn't seem to complicated to me.

Blind hate sure is ugly at times.
So a resident of Illinois that lives in Chicago can get a CCW just that easily?

The whole idea of the FOID card to buy ammunition is absurd. I am a Missouri resident and I can buy ammunition and firearms in Illinois easier than Illinois residents. I went to a Gander Mountain in Illinois and all I needed to do to buy ammo was show my Missouri DL.

Yes, 100% true. Chi still has an AWB but most of it's prohibitions are gone the way of the dinosaur. They've made it hard for gun shops to operate so city residents need to go to gun stores in the suburbs. IL has no magazine restrictions. A handful of towns with bans enacted before CCW passed do. Not really an issue.

Absolutely. IL is a SHALL ISSUE state and Chicago is still in IL, at least until we can kick it out.

FOID card? It is what it is there is always an effort to get rid of it. It's not hard for me to buy ammo. I don't show a FOID card either. I buy my match 22s all the time without one.

It's funny, you don't hear many people from IL complain about it, but it's all you hear about from others. That and the misinformation they repeat as fact.

jmace57 - why anybody would want to retire to northern Illinois with its high taxes and energy costs, cold weather and snow, boggles my mind.

But, if you must, here are some options. Kankakee is about 40 miles south of Joliet and right on I-57. A little further south and west is Normal, IL, which has the junctions of I-39/55/74 for easy transportation in any direction and is a "safe distance" away from Shicago. I-74 takes you SE to Champaign the south on 57 to Mattoon. Distance-wise, Normal is about 2/3 of the way south from Westmont to Mattoon, while Kankakee is less than 1/3 the distance to Mattoon. What may matter here is which of your kids you would like to be closest to, or, have closest to you.

One more thing, being this far north, you will need a reliable source of heat that won't skin you alive. This leaves out both electric heat and propane, for various reasons. Natural gas is your best option for "forced air" space heating. If you can find a place that has hydronic hot water heat, specifically, radiant under-floor heat, this will keep your floors nice and warm on those cold winter nights.
;)

J.T., I believe there is some confusion here. The OP has one daughter, who lives in or very close to Chicago. In another post, I mentioned that I have two nieces that I visit with some regularity, who live in Westmont and Mattoon.

So jmace57 is only concerned with living close by his Chicago daughter.

Yes - just for clarification - I do have a son in Ohio, but my daughter currently lives in Chicago (Roscoe Village), but plans to move a bit north - Evanston or Glenview. She has health issues and we must move there to be able to assist. So this is not an option. We also don't want to be 40 or 50 miles away.

My thought has been that she will be North of the city, and my preference is to be in Lake County rather than Cook County.

Thanks to all for your input.

And thanks JTHunter - having natural gas heat is on our "list" for the realtor. We will look into the under-floor heating as well.

While there is a constant fight with a couple idiots in the IL legislature that would like to disarm everyone, the state isn't too horrible outside of Chicago and Cook Co.

Sure, we'd like to lose the foid card, but I own various firearms from revolvers to ARs with more 30 rd. mags than I'd admit to. It has never been a problem. I carry every day and while we have the dumb signs they are pretty few and far between in my area(Rockford), and since there has been no blood in the streets wild west shootouts the scaremongers like to state in their arguments, hopefully business owners get the idea they don't need to post signs.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. Thanks for being neighborly!
