Well after having spent my whole life in Maryland, the GF/soon to be fiance has accepted a job in Alabama, so we have decided to move. Have to sell my house (7 years) and leave my job (5 years) so its scary.

Good thing is, no more MD gun laws, can get my CCW, don't have to hide gun ownership!

Any good places to go shooting in Birmingham? I can always go to her folks' spread in Eutaw (Greene County) but its kinda a haul. According to Packing.org CCW in Jefferson County is $10 and fill out a form at the Sheriffs.

Man, I'll be the first person EVER in my family to move out of MD, but at least its to a gun friendly state!

Congrats, welcome to our fair city :)

There are a number of great places to go shoot.

I mainly go to ATI (Alabama Training Institute) on Tallapoosa St. downtown Bham. It is run by a police officer and his wife, both are very good people.

Let me know when you roll into town, would be good to go shootin with ya.

Best,
Hans

EDIT: If you are going to reside within Jefferson county, it is $7.50 cents to acquire a pistol license. It requires a 3 week background check (the ONLY county in AL to do this, afaik, most of them will allow you to get a permit the same day you apply, 15 minute turn around) and then it is wacky races to packingville.

We have yet to be turned into a liberal nanny state. I hope that won't happen anytime soon. :uhoh:

Thanks, don't know why I "disremembered" $10!:D

After not being allowed CCW, I think I can wait 3 weeks....

Probably moving late summer/early fall. Hear its a scorcher down there!

Congrats on your escape.

Today I was offered and accepted the job I'd been hoping for, still in Maryland, but at least I wont be living with my parents any longer. I even found a roommate (one of their other recent hires has been living at home and desperate for a place of his own but needed a roommate), we've been pointed towards Bel Air/Abington (Woodsdale complex amoung others) or White Marsh (White Springs complex). Should be interesting...

Nah, you didn't "disremember" the $10.00! it went up to that but finally went back down to $7.50 with the changing of police admin.

Yeah, we have it fairly warm down here during the summer months. Most people don't really think of Alabama as being part of the tropics; they usually change their tune once they stay here for a week :)
Look for temperatures in the 90s with 100% humidity alongside it during the summer. This is definitely a T-shirt and shorts type of environment.. but it gets a lot better and is really comfy during the winter months.

But again, welcome to the state. I would be more than happy to give any help that I can. I'm sure the other members of THR from AL would do likewise.

Have a good one :)
Hans

Once you get settled come up to Huntsville, about 75 miles north. I've got the Tenn river to play in, hunt coyotes all year, keep freezer full of venison, camp, canoe, fish, and shoot high power guns every week end. All within 15 minutes of my house.

Welcome To The Heart Of dixie My Friend-

Lot's of good places to shoot around Bombingham, AL.
Besides what has already been mentioned, there is
the F.O.P. range located in Pleasant Grove, AL with
a membership fee that approaches the cost of many
firearms. Then there is Steel Cities located on
South Shades Crest Road; and used on occassions
by Hoover, AL Police Dept. I currently use the PD
range as owned and operated by the Bessemer,
AL Police Dept.

The job market in Bombingham (Jefferson County) AL
is terrible. Most jobs fall well below the pay
scale as seen throughout the U.S. As an example,
one hospital here locally just raised its skilled (RN)
nursing from $15.XX per hour, to 18.XX per hour;
which is far behind the national average. Security
positions at the Mercedes plant in Vance are in
control of Wackenhut Security, with wages from
$8.00 an hour. Just a couple examples, that I'm
familiar with. One can drive a beer truck and make
$40,000 a year; but run a daily risk of being robbed
as you turn each and every corner!

A add runs on TV every night, from The US Attorneys
Office in Birmingham stating, "Trade in your illegal
guns for jewelry"; and it shows handcuffs and leg
irons. Everybody here carries a gun; police officer's,
law abiding citizens, drug dealers, crack addicts, and
all sort's of other scumbags. Home invasions are on
the increase. Just last week, five persons went to
jail for a three week home invasion crime spree. Its
too bad they didn't hit the right house!

Some areas to avoid at all cost: Gate City, Lovemans
Village, Collegeville, The Brickyard, Elyton Village, Cooper
Green and Southtown Projects, Kingston, Rosedale,
Titusville, Central City, Smithfield, and Pratt City.
If you don't believe me, just ask any police officer
upon your arrival! New police recruits graduating
from the academy are assigned to these locales.

Good Luck, Stay Safe, and Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

Congratulations on your escape

Remember to vote conservative to keep the bliss ninnys out of office. Don't mess it up like CA, NJ, NY or MA.

Welcome...

to Alabama. This is my personal invitation to join me at the FOP range to burn some powder as my guest. The range has several courses, all outdoors. You will be pleased by our well kept secrets.

The higher priced housing is south of town in Hoover and North Shelby county, also east in Trussville, Springville, Argo area. You should'nt have any trouble finding new or used housing for purchase or lease.

AlaDan and others, we should meet and shoot like the Tennessee mafia does.

Roadkill, N. Alabama was my sales territory and it's the prettiest part of the state IMO.

You can hardly go wrong anywhere in Alabama. Let us know when you land. Will you be scouting in advance of the move?

Welcome, greyhound, to the B'ham area! I've lived here most of my life and it's a pretty darn good place to call home!

I, too, shoot at ATI (though not as often as I might otherwise like to!) and I'm still trying to get myself over to Bessemer PD's range to burn some powder with AlaDan! :)

I've had my CCW for about thirteen years now...it's nice to have it so easy as far as obtaining and maintaining one with what you hear folks in other right-to-carry states have to put up with.

Hey-Hey-Hey There Mr. Front Range My Friend-

It's been awhile, and every time I hit the BPD range
I look for you? Next shooting date is scheduled for
Saturday May 1, from 0800 hrs to 1600 hrs. We will
be looking forward to burning that powder!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

I can give you a lot of info on shooting in B'ham. I moved from there 5 years ago and the part that broke my heart was loosing my really good gun buddies. These things happen for a reason.

Anyway look up www.foprangeinc.com . They are some of the finest people you could ever know and do tell them I sent you. Also check out www.scssa.org that is Steel City Sport Shooters and one of my best loves. It is a beautiful range. SCSS is a membership only range but they do hold matches there which are open to the public. Whatever youy have you can shoot it there. Membership in the range is a very worthy thing to do.

Themic, there's a rumor going around that there will be some outdoor parties in the fall down that way, along with sporting contests. Dunno much about the availability of ranges, but there's a lot of deer in west AL. There was a regular contributor to our boards who taught at the University, but she hasn't been heard from lately. If you order pizza from Papa John's in the evening, you might well have it delivered by my oldest, who is down there attending the University.

Editted to add: You gotta go to Dreamland for the ribs. A bit pricey, a bit overrated, but ya gotta. Goes with the turf.

Another postscript. SCSSA has a LOT of different shooting competitions on the weekends. Be sure to visit the website, and some see us.

Thanks for all the good words folks, it means a lot.

Haven't quite worked out the details yet as we just decided for sure yesterday. She will go in probably June with me following later (kinda owe my job at least till September).

Her parents are just thrilled to have their girl back and are hopefully have some connections to help me with jobs and such. They are "Auburn people" (y'all from there know what I mean) - a long line of graduates way way back.

Man, there seems to be a LOT more places to go shooting than up here.

And don't worry about some liberal Yankee "escaping South" just to try to make it like where they're from - 100% conservative Republican here!:D

My ole greyhound dog hated ice and snow anyway as he's from Florida!

Greyhound,

Hope you do well down here.

It is mandatory that you, once here, must help to maintain our "curtain" of strerotypes. This is to keep up appearances to "scarecrow" assuming, stuck up, holier-than-thou, progressive poo-poo'ers that want to come in and "fix" us out of the state. One must purchase an old PU with a gun rack for starters. Your firearms ownership is a plus already!

By the way, there is a small, decent public range in southern Talladega Co. if you don't mind the drive. It is operated by the Fed gov in the Talladega National forest. Range fee is $3/day. Get there early, especially before hunting season. There is also an archery range there.

I also hear that there is a club north of B'ham called Magic City Gun Club that is supposed to be nice.

Congrats, Greyhound :D

I settle on my new place south of York, PA next Tuesday. Always good to hear when a fellow American escapes from the Soviet Socialist Republik of Maryland!

Welcome to Alabama, they don't call it the Heart of Dixie for nothing.

As to your girl being from a long line of graduates of that *ahem* other school in the state, it's a (relatively) small price to pay for coming here.

If you're ever in the Decatur/Huntsville area, email me. There are some pretty nice places here to shoot and I am a member of a small range in the NW corner/Shoals area(Florence/Sheffield/Muscle Shoals).

Maybe we should start a thread in the Rallying Point for all Alabama High Roader's and try to plan a get-together...

Mino

Minotaur, that sounds like a plan...I didn't realize there were so many Alabama folk on the boards!

My father lives up in your neck of the woods in Tuscumbia...very pretty area up there!

AlaDan, I'd better not make any promises for that 1 May date, but I shall try. I took a vacation day from work today and have just returned from ATI, having run just over 300 rounds through the new (to me) P228...what a great pistol!!!

I know some Alabama folks over at SigForum.com have staged some get-together shoots over at ATI...heck, I'll have to find that thread over there, it's probably some of the same folks that post HERE! :)

Yup, some of the same folks anyway ;)

we've had a couple of big get togethers, afternoon shoots with a nice Dreamland BBQ ending :)

I missed the last one though :(
