Alabama - minimum residency to buy handguns?

So I finally made the move from Maryland to Birmingham, and was messing around in Academy Sports when I almost fell over - a S&W 642 for only $349 (in Maryland it would be $500+).

But, sadly, I couldn't buy it if I wanted to as the salesman said that Alabama has a 90 day residency requirement to buy handguns ( I did get my Alabama DL Wednesday).

Now, I had heard that Jefferson County has a 6 month residency requirement for CCW, but I hadn't heard of this 90 day deal, nor can I find it in Alabama gun regs online. Its certainly plausible, and the salesman seemed very sure, but I wonder if anyone can confirm this.

On the good side, I am going out to Pleasant Grove tommorrow to join the FOP Range.

I am LOVING Alabama so far, even if I have to wait 90 days to buy a handgun for half what theu cost in MD!

First I've heard of that...

but for sure the guys at Academy are jumpy. If you have an Ala DL, how would anyone know the length of residency?

Well, I did say I had "just" moved from Maryland and was amazed at the prices, which made the man remark about the minimum residency, but maybe it was store policy and not state law?

My temporary license ( I got a piece of paper until the real one comes in the mail, though it does have a picture) has an issue date of 11/3 on it so I guess that proves residency?

Man if a big chain store sells a new 642 for $349 I can't imagine what a used one would cost at a smaller gun shop. ( I plan on visiting Simmons Sporting Goods in Bessemer at the recomendation of Ala Dan, as soon as I can find it!)

For Pete's sake Academy had a Glock 27 new for $469. At gun shows in Md they might be $600. (Now to be fair I am sure some Maryland dealers are less pricey but not the ones I used to frequent).
