New job, new State, lower taxes and BS. Ill be moving to NC over the next few months (RDU area) and am looking for a 30,000 foot level of info on: how do I get a firearm ID card (if I need one), pistol permit (again if I need) and where are good places to shoot (public and private).

Thanks for any help here.

No firearm ID card in NC. No permit necessary to purchase a long gun. For a pistol you need to apply for a pistol purchase permit. No permits are needed to own and keep firearms in NC. If your referring to a conceal carry permit, CCW, NC is a shall issue state and is what you should apply for if you want to conceal carry and or you want to be able to purchase a pistol w/out applying for a permit before each purchase. Don't know the Raleigh Durham area for ranges but can recommend the Rockingham County Gun Club which is a private club: http://www.rockinghamcountygunclub.com/
Welcome to NC! After NJ you'll find the laws in NC to be a breath of fresh air.

NC to NJ like the title says, Bummer!

But reading the follow ups, NJ to NC, Way To Go, big WIN!

As Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen says: "In New Jersey everything is legal as long as you don't get caught!" :)

Welcome from a fellow gun owner in NC, just please don't bring the NJ politics or weather. :)

I live in the RDU area. I'm assuming you're moving into Wake county, but if you're not be aware that our sister counties(Durham and Orange County) don't have quite the same attitude towards guns as the rest of the state. Durham county actually requires registration of handguns, although I know more than a couple of people who ignore it.

Anyways -- as others have stated, go down to the sheriff's office, and you can apply for pistol permits and a CHP(must have a training course first).

we've got a nice indoor range that the county parks runs. http://www.wakegov.com/firingrange/default.htm

here are two of my favorite stores -- good folks and fair prices
http://www.pdhsc.com/ (they also have a small range, pistol and rimfire only)

Welcome to the Triangle area. I live in Wake County. Here's what I can tell you about the local ranges:

Eagle 1 - Located in North Raleigh near the intersection of Old Wake Forest Road and New Hope Church Road. 7 lanes with automatic target retrieve. 2 of them are for rifles. 25 yards I think. I think they get $13 per hour. No tables to put your stuff on. No observation window. Surveillance is by video camera. Ventilation is not the best. Nice relaxed staff, and nice shop. Good place to shoot.

Personal Defence Handgun Safety Center - Located near Hey 70 and Tryon Road. Not sure of the exact number of lanes. 8 I think. Automatic Target retrieve. 25 yards I think. They allow any handgun (including S&W 500) but only light rifles. $15 per person. No time limit. Small shop. Staff can be hit or miss.

Wake County Range - Limited hours Tues Thurs and Fri evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. $10 per hour, but you have to attend a 3 hour orientation class to get a range card. The orientation is held about twice a month. No automatic Target system. Range goes cold every 15 minutes or so and everyone goes down range to change their targets. No shop, but they do have a limited stock of ammo and some targets to sell. Too many lanes to count. I don't think there's any limit to what you can shoot. If there is, it's mighty big. Most Range Officers are competent and friendly. Some are very bad. Your experience there is all in who is on duty when you are on the line. Nice benched to shoot off from.

That's all the ranges I know about in Wake County, but there are a few other shops:

Davi's - Near Eagle 1. They operated a range until about a year ago, but now it's closed. Heard many stories about why, but none have been verifiable. Their shop has the highest prices in town, and fair advice from the friendly counter people. Stock has dwindled way down since the range closed. Many people only go there at great need.

Fuquay Gun and Gold - Many (including me) consider this the best shop around. Good selection, great counter people, and excellent prices. Located in Fuquay-Varina.

Lawman's supply - Located near Personal Defense Handgun Safety Center, they is another good shop. Lots of apparel and pretty goods selection of handguns. Lot's of tactical gadgetry. Good prices.

Perry's - Located in Wendell, East of Raleigh. Owner is very friendly and will talk your ear off if they are not busy. Old building and maintains the small town feel. Chairs near the counter for sitting around BSing. Very good selection and pretty good prices, but not the best around.

Hope this helps.

I live in SC.

From what I know about NC, pistol permits are $5, you can get them at the local sheriff's office, and I think one permit may be good for multiple guns.

Rex's Guns & Ammo near Hendersonville is a good place to shoot. They have a pretty decent selection of rental guns.

As someone who grew up there (before required Registration) i can confidently state, that's because Durham has, for at least the 26 years i've been around it, been the cesspit of the triangle.

Like i said i grew up in Durham county (Oak Grove for those who know the area), and i'd move to Orange county/chapel Hill :barf: before i'd move back to Durham.

others have a better grip on current shops etc. all but maybe one of the shops i frequented between age 18 and when i left the state are closed. the one remaining shop that is still around is Young Guns in Apex.
Young Guns Inc
813 E Williams St, Apex, NC 27502
(919) 387-8393

as for ranges, i can only add the place my father and I used most regularly, "The Range" Up between Butner/Creedmore and Oxford, off of I-85.

good luck and enjoy the increased freedom of being out of NJ.

Yeah, what he said! PDHSC, great folks there, good place to shoot. Wake County Range is pretty good too, up to 100 yards all indoor. Nothing for skeet/trap though if that's what you're looking for.

...and I think one permit may be good for multiple guns.

Each handgun purchase requires a separate permit in NC even if you're buying more than one at the same time from the same place.
Buying three pistols...you need three permits.

Best part is CCW is easy to get & acts as a purchase permit, so you don't have to go thru the nut-roll of always going down to the Sheriff's Dept to pick up purchase permits.

It al depends on the county you're residing in. Some counties sheriffs require a waiting period, for instance Henderson & Buncombe Cos. make you fill out paperwork then come back in 7-15 days to pick up your purchase permits.

Some counties are DEFINITELY worse than others. Durham & Wake, especially. Orange Co. is liberal, hippy hell, but with a pro-2A Sheriff. I'm in Almamance, so pro-2A Sheriff & conservative politics. YMMV.

Also a waiting period in guilford but, I also think $10.00 per permit can't remember. Also a pro-2A sheriff in this county.

all - thanks for the feedback. looking forward to a little relief from all the bs i've had to deal with. now need to figure how to move the firearms.

And your shall issue N C permit is reciprocal with Virginia.
Its good in all of Dixie, and then some.

Here in Buncombe it was five calendar days before Charlie retired. Now that City-County ID is doing purchase permits, I dont know.

Yes, however, one permit can be used for multiple long guns, if purchased at the same time. No real advantage to that other than you wont get delayed by NICS.
