So I think I've settled on the m&p 15 sport as my first AR and I think I want to put a red dot on it but have a few questions.

-What do I need to mount a reddot to this gun? Some sort of rings or will it mount directly?

-can the front sight be removed or do I mount the red dot to see over the front sight?

-do you need a spefic type of red dot for an AR?

-should I get a1x or 1.5x red dot? Used for target shooting 25-100 yards mainly and some varmint shooting plus a backup home defense gun

Depends on the red dot. If you're buying a tube style red dot, then you'll need ring(s). If it's something like an Aimpoint Micro, then it should come with a mount that's attached to the sight.

Not that I know of, and there is really no need to remove it. You can set up a 1x red dot so that you can see the irons through the red dot tube itself. It's called "co-witnessing".

Not really.

I would go with a 1x sight, as you can still co-witness with it. You won't need anything more than 1x for inside 100-150yds.

Hope this helped. :)

A lot of tube body red dots come with a mount from the factory. Usually if they do it's an AR-height mount. If your red dot doesn't come with a mount, you'll have to buy one for it. You need one that is the correct height for an AR. They make 2 kinds -- ones that give you an absolute co-witness, and ones that give you a lower 1/3 co-witness. The absolute co-witness means that irons should line right up with the red dot, so your dot should be right on top of your front sight post when you have your iron sight alignment. A lower 1/3 co-witness means that the irons line up in the lower 1/3 of the red dot's field of view and the dot will be a bit above the tip of the front sight post when you have sight alignment on your irons. Most factory mounts are set up for an absolute co-witness.

All of the Aimpoints come with mounts I believe, my recent purchase of the PRO came with a lower 1/3 co-witness mount and once I got used to it, I'm starting to like it.
