My community college students in Detroit know I am a "go to guy" for CCW info.

I had two requests yesterday with two declarations of intent to spend tax refunds on obtaining their CCW / CPL.

Over 2% of the population is high compared to many states.

The latest Census data puts the Michigan population at 9,969,727 residents. This means that statewide about 1 in 43.829 people has a Michigan CPL. That works out to approximately 2.28% of the total state population.

Even higher for the adult population of legal age to carry then.

Persons under 18 years old, percent, 2008 23.9%

So almost a quarter of the population is under 18, and it would be even higher for those under 21.
There is easily another 1.1%+ in the 18-21 age bracket.

So if we assume at least 25% of the population is ineligible for a permit, that would leave you with only 7477295.25 people eligible.

This would mean 1 in 32.87!
There is probably slightly more than 1.1% of the population in the 18-21 age bracket. Which could easily up this percentage of eligible people who have permits.

Then if you factor in for prohibited persons... You would get an even higher number and percentage for those qualified. And I am sure there is a large number of prohibited adults in the Detroit area.

Kudos on the revolver as the picture used in the article, for the non-gun person it is not nearly as intimidating as an large capacity semi. Rather than show firepower simplicity seems to work much better with your article. How about a follow up article on all the states permits versus population. I think it would open everybodys eyes to the the actual gun control being imposed on citizens by the liberal "May Issue" states.

If you have current figures please point me in the right direction.

I'd love to write such an article, but the latest info I can find is from 2005. That's a bit stale.

I don't have the time to call each state's Attorney General (or whoever) to get the info directly, so if you have a source, please share it.

I was actually wondering just what that statistic was yesterday! I'm new to CCW and still in the "OMG, they're ALL staring at me!" phase, made worse by having a full size semi. I was wondering how many other people around me were carrying as well. I know at least five people at work with their CPL and several more intending to get it.

I might be in that data. Got the letter that the CPL was ready to pick up on 5/4. My g/f is still waiting on her CPL to work through the bureaucracy even though she completed her application only a week after me.

As soon as my Daughter and her husband take their CHL course this summer you can add 2 more, and I'm buying a gun for each of them once they have ther CHL.
