Multi-Tool Opinions

I have a Leatherman Wave and wouldn't leave home without it. Also usually have a Micra on my keyring, but it vanished during an adventure race and I haven't found it yet. :(

The Swisstool is also a good, well-made tool. I dislike the Gerbers, they have some substantial design flaws.

On that topic, anyone know of a maker of good Kydex belt carriers for a Leatherman Wave?

I carry the Leatherman Super Tool daily. I can't speak highly enough about it.
I use it dozens of times a day as a contractor.

- Cut sheetrock for recepticals
- Cut copper tubing
- cut, strip and crimp wire
- The Phillips screwdriver works on #1,2 and 3 screws and stays sharp
- Thee sizes of flat tip screwdriver
- I use it as a hammer in a pinch......never hurt it.
- Excellent coarse and fine file
- 9" ruler
- I lost one outside and found it a YEAR later......did not rust.

The Super Tool will save you MANY trips back to the truck.

I own a Gerber and love it. It stays in my truck. But the multi-tool that is on my duty belt is a Buck tool. Same basic features as all the others except its very well built and kinda heavy. The nylon pouch is also very tough. The handles sorta twist to open, and it has the sharpest blade i've ever seen.

This is one tough puppy. Its been used extensively in the Fire/Emergency services for the past 4 years and has survived relatively unscathed even after being run over by an Engine.

This is the tool I recommend.

Well, Zip, you got some tough choices to make.

Personally, I'd for for the WAVE. I'm not discounting the other multi's on the market, either.

Leatherman

The ONLY multi tool I'll EVER own is a LEATHERMAN!!!

When I was in "The big sandbox #1" I broke my Leatherman. This was bad:uhoh: I sent it in for repair from Saudi or whatever ****hole country I was in at the time and told them I abused the heck out of it, and if they would fix/replace I would gladly pay for it.

They sent me a CASE (12) of them and said "No charge. Pass them around. Hope this will help. Thank you." Or something similar (its been a while).

Well, lets just say I think that is great customer service!!!:D

I have two of the Gerbers (Lost one, bought a replacement at a gun show, then found the lost one), but I really like the Buck. Because of the way the handles deploy on the Buck, you can actually get torque on the pliers to OPEN, as well as close. I gave one to my F-I-L, and dropped broad hints that I'd like one, but nooooooooooo, I get a Gerber. F-I-L was a good sport, offered to trade.

All that being said, M60's story would probably influence my decision on what to buy next. Can't beat that kinda support!!!

I own 4 "Leathermans"...

But I actually only paid for one. The other 3 were gifts. The first model was the "original" that came with a leather belt sheath. GREAT needle-nose pliers! It's in the trunk of my motorcycle and I've used it for years. Amazingly, it's as tight as the day I bought it and I don't think it's ever been oiled. (Hummmm, gotta do that.) The second was just like the original, but about half the size. Perfect! The needle nose pliers have been great on trips. Formally, I kept it in my "carry-on" bag., but now I guess it has to be checked within my suitcase. The last two are pretty neat also. My wife gave me both. The first was a little green "Micra". The Micra is neat, but I have to unfold the Micra to get to the "tools". However, the one she gave me last week in REALLY neat! It's called a "Squirt". The Squirt is what I carry. It's got some really good scissors on the "inside" (UNfolded), but all the little "tools" can be opened and accessed from the "outside" while the little thing is still in the FOLDED position. The "Squirt" is a wonderful little gizmo that's about the size of a couple of "cough-drops". (No foolin'!)
The only "gun related" job I've ever used my Leatherman's on was to change grips.

I've owned a Leatherman over a decade.
I remember once a friend at work had one of the Gerbers, perhaps a real early version. While using it as pliers, they slipped and he pinched the crap out of the palm of his hand. He took them and heaved them as hard as he could!

I will never forget that.:p

I have a Gerber Multiplier Scout, which I keep in my laptop bag (I am a systems engineer for a telco/ISP). I don't use it a lot but when I need it, it's very handy.

The tool which largely replaced the Multiplier in day to day use for me is a Victorinox CyberTool 41. It's basically a SwissChamp redesigned for geeks, with a folding socket screwdriver set and a small but still very useful pliers, among a zillion other tools. I've used it to take apart everything from PCs to big Nortel ATM switches.

I bought an inepensive one at a show a couple years ago...I think it's by Buckmark. I keep it in my rangebag & figured I'd use it till it break. Well, it hasn't broken yet & I use it quite often. Next time tho, I'm getting something bigger so there's more to hang onto while in use.

mutitools

Our office has pretty much tried every tool out there starting with the original Leatherman, SOG, Gerbers, Victorix, Schrade, . Best we have foundfor all-around use is the Leatherman Super 200. The screwdriver tips are a little longer then anybody else's, the handle edges are "rolled" for comfort and it locks open with a release to unlock. It's done duty for me in most all of the Embassies in the Middle-East. Get a mag-holster to hold it and the accessory package if you need socket wrenches occasionally.

Another vote for the Leatherperson.

I have a Wave but am considering adding an ST200 (not sure if it can open with one hand) and/or the Crunch to add to the collection. Not sure if giving up all the gizmos for the grips on the Crunch is worth it though. Wave is the greatest all-around multi-tool IMO though I haven't played with much since I got it, so there may be something newer and better?

I got one of the original SOG Tools when they came out many years ago. I finally got so loose last year from usage (I carried it everyday everywhere) that I went out and started looking at the newer models out there. I ended up with the Leatherman Wave also. Have to admit I like it better than I thought I would.

Hi everyone, I got my Mom's husband a leatherman and he loved it. He loved the gadgetityness (sp?) of it, the heft of it and how smoothly the blades and tools folded out. This christmas I got him a red mini maglite and a red "juice" leatherman. They match in color and the juice has a corkscrew with is probably the only tool he would use with any regularity.
