Looking forward to attending an Appleseed this spring. How many mags do I really practically need? (I'm operating on a tight budget) Taking a Marlin 795 22lr. Already have 1 10rd'er; is a an extra 7rd'r enough or do I need multiple 10rd magazines?

Project Appleseed State Coordinator for CT checking in here...

I'd recommend 4 10-round magazines if you can swing it (5 is better though - one for a spare). Any less and you may be spending more time than you'd like preparing magazines during the Course of Fire for the AQT (qualification test). That said, if you can't swing 4, an Instructor can help you prep magazines during the COF.

Have a look at this article in the Appleseed Welcome Center on recommended items to bring to an Appleseed shoot.

Edited to add the portion from the above page relevant to your question:

5 Mags unloaded if not more. 20rds works well if State law allows You will be making mag changes, and shooting strings of 13 rounds or more in a row. We HIGHLY SUGGEST you bring 5 mags (or even more) to your Appleseed Shoot. Now if you only have one, or two, don't feel you can not attend if you can not get more before the shoot. If you can shoot 10 rounds, you can participate at Appleseed (even if you can't, we still want you there and you will still learn a ton). Two mags should be an absolute minimum, so try to have at least two.

HTH,
CJ

At the one I went to, they didn't want you to have a bunch of loaded mags so that it was easier to monitor safety. They gave us a minute or two between courses of fire to load the one or two mags necessary. If your shoot is like mine was, a 10 round and 7 round would be fine because the most you load is 10 in one and a 8 in one/2 in the other combo. You could get away with just the twi, but I would bring a spare just in case.

All that said, I brought six so I had spares and was able to lend a pair to someone with malfunctioning mags.

yet another budget LTR build for those considering...

I also signed up for Fenton in April.

I settled middle-road mag wise. Just ordered 1 extra 10rd. and 1 7rd. Considering the new 795 is just a 100 post rebate gotta be sensible on what I put into it :)

Only had tube fed .22's (giving my dad one for appleseed) so my budget ltr build was:

Marlin 795 $125-25 rebate- $100
used tech sights- $55
1 1/4" swivels $12
sling (sks borrowed) free
10rd mag 15
7rd mag 11

$193 total.. the looking forward to 2 days of learning and shooting? priceless I hope.

gidaeon, that's a fine choice for an LTR and one that is growing more in popularity at Appleseeds (vs. the venerable Ruger 10/22). I have one myself that I use as a loaner rifle.

For those browsing this thread contemplating an Appleseed, I just wanted to add that you certainly don't need to build a custom rifle of any type to participate (although an Appleseed is a sure good excuse to pick up a new rifle!). The skills and techniques taught can be learned on any rifle. If you bring a bolt-action with no way to attach a sling, that's better than bringing nothing or not coming at all. So come one, come all.

Did my first appleseed this weekend at Fenton, MI; 2 mags were all I needed after all - the third was a good backup.

Awesome program\instructors! Their teachings got me to a 210 (minimum rifleman) score in one weekend. Major improvements over a short time. I'll be back, and I've gained confidence with irons.

gondorian,

Thanks for the link to the high-capacity Marlin magazine for .22LR: http://sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=359221
National Magazine 15-rd. Marlin® Mag
This high-capacity 15-rd. Mag fits Marlin® models: 989M2, 995, 70, 70P.
Tough steel construction. Synthetic floor plate. Synthetic follower. Weighs just 2 ozs.
Is there a similar magazine available for the Marlin 917 (in .17 HMR)?

You can squeak by with two but I'd recommend at least one spare. A 7rd and a 10rd would be okay but not two 7's. You REALLY don't wanna have to do more than one magazine change on stages two and three. The 15rd doesn't really do you much good.
