OK, here is my report.
First of all, I had a great time and would highly recommend it. I am already thinking about attending another one.
As was mentioned previously in this thread by others, the history portions were great and I learned quite a bit I did not know before. I was only able to attend one day, since I had some family stuff come up at the last minute, but it was still well worth the price I paid. My Marlin 795 and CCI Mini Mag ammo didn't let me down. I had zero problems with either rifle or ammo. I bought some elastic elbow pads - absolutely vital. I'm convinced my elbows would have been bleeding without them. I also brought a shooting mat I got on sale at Midway, but I think next time I will bring extra padding for my left bottom-most rib. I got a major bruise there.
The bad news is I did not get my patch. My final (and best) AQT scored at 198, 12 points short of qualifying. However, it was light years better than where I started at the beginning of the day. I am confident I will get my patch next time.
We learned to use a sling, and shot prone, sitting/kneeling and standing at 25 meters. The targets we used simulated man-size targets at 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m. The instructors knew what they were talking about, both regarding the history and the marksmanship. Some of the instructors in training needed a little assistance on things, but that is how you learn. There was a good ratio of volunteers to students, 6 of them and 15 of us. I never felt like I was being ignored or neglected, and there was a lot of bonding among the students as well. All in all, a good time and good learning experience. Thanks to all who provided advice and encouragement prior.
Yay Appleseed!
