Went to the range today with my brother in law who had just recently purchased his first handgun which is a Ruger E9 and he did so at my suggestion for a good first pistol. I had heard great things about the SR9 and figured that the E9 was the same exact thing.

We took it to a local range this afternoon and I must say I had high hopes and was seriously disappointed. We literally had every kind of malfunction possible including stovepipes, failure to eject, partially chambering and generally really horrible cycling issues. Also we noticed that when a loaded mag was inserted that it would cause the slide to drop without even touching the slide release.

I guess I was just wondering if anyone else has had these issues with their E9s or SR9s for that matter. I really must say that my overall impression of this pistol is that it is of much pooper quality then I had hoped for.

Could be it just needs more break in rounds. I've seen some that required two hundred rounds to get fully broken in. Check instructions and/or E-mail Ruger. Pooper quality? Yeah, could be!
Generally Ruger makes top quality firearms and they will correct it.
If you bought it from a local gun shop, return it to them and let them deal with Ruger.

Just thought of something I ran into, you aren't left handed are you? My son is left handed and can't shoot my SR-9.

The palm of his hand pushes in on the mag release a little and that jams up everything. The bad part of Ruger SR-9s is with all the safety crap on them, the mag release also affects the mag disconnect and when it shifts, the gun won't fire or jams up.

I shoot it right handed and can shoot it all day long and it works flawlessly.

A buddy picked his 9e up Thursday, he immediately shot 50 rounds through it and had 6-7 failures. I went to the range with him Saturday, and he had no problems with 100 rounds....he was shooting the cheap Brown Bear ammo.

Put some more rounds through it.

Curious as to why you suggested a pistol you seem to have no experience with, and then a different version at that.

I have no experience with the 9E but I do own a couple of Rugers & have used their customer service before. I would call them and tell them about the problems. Make sure to ask them for a shipping label. They will E mail one to you. Everything will be done on their dime & it should be back to you within a week. Ruger doesn't always do the best quality control but they do have on of the best customer service reputations in the industry.

I sent back my SR 1911 because of an issue with rust under the grips & they took care of it & returned it quickly.

If it is his first handgun he may have been limp wristing it, hitting the slide with a finger or thumb, or hitting a control during fire.

In the end, I would expect it may need a good cleaning (factory grease can be thick) if not done already and then just more ammo run through it before I would send it back. If it's still not right after a few more boxes of ammo (and another shooter or two trying it) then I would send it back.

I'm thinking it maybe the mag! I remember also seeing some nose divers too. I have been shooting quite a while as well so I'm sure it wasn't limp wristing I shoot my other pistols without an issue. And as for the guy who criticized me for suggesting the pistol go wine somewhere else I had read countless reviews on the sr9 and how reliable it was and that's why I made the suggestion. He bought it at target master so were gonna go back mid week and their going to test it a bit.

I do not know anything about the E9, but the SR series often have feed problems that are related to the sharp edge of the extractor hanging up on the case - that was a terrible problem with my SR40c. If your extractor has issues, may be causing all the problems?
