In a previous thread I was wavering between a M1A brush/scout and a Fulton Tanker Garand.

Well, I picked up the Tanker and it's on it's way.

Now's the time to accessorize. What are the absolute 'must have' Garand specific tools and gadgets I need? I don't intend anything radical, just want to be able to do a complete detail strip and clean if needed. Also I'm going to replace the vortex flash suppressor that's currently on it and replace it with a T-37 type. What tools do I need for that?

First Garand I've owned. I hear from other owners that one is not enough. We'll see.

two things:

1-a #1 snubbie flat tip screwdriver, file the ends down a bit for a good fit in the gas plug

2- plenty of ammo

M 10 Cleaning Rod

Get an M10 cleaning rod. The handle is a combination tool that:
1) Fits gas cylinder plug
2) Makes removal of the extractor a snap. (Extractor holds firing pin and ejector in place.)
3) Has smaller screwdriver to fit rear sight screws.
4) Usually comes in a cloth bag which fits in holes under trap door in butt plate.

Also recommend a ratchet type chamber brush. Clean chamber is a must in the garand (This brush also doubles as a broken case extractor in a pinch, which you hopefully will never need.) A cleaning rod section is used to drive this brush.

Next you'll need lots of ammo! :) Have fun!

Regards,
hps

Other than the buttstock cleaning kit, THE "must have" Garand tool is the M3-A1 tool. This is used to do all disassembly and maintenance on the M1.

As luck would have it, Midway in Missouri is selling them CHEAP.

The complete buttstock kit consists of:
The M10 cleaning rod handle.
The 4 sections of the rod.
A bore brush.
A loop tip.
A tiny jar of Lubriplate grease.
A two section oiler.
