Tanker Garand or M1A bush rifle?

Oh great and wise THR rifle gurus- for what ever reason I’ve been jonesing for a shorter semi auto .30 cal rifle; I know I know, it doesn’t fit with my ‘.257 and under’ mantra but what the heck. I’ve narrowed it down to two: Tanker Garand or M1A bush rifle.

I NEED a Garand, and I love the idea of the tanker version. I can pick up a Fulton Armory made tanker for about $1100 or I get the bush/squad scout version of the M1A, I already have a full size M1A so I have plenty of full cap magazines. The whole ‘scout rifle’ concept is lost on me so I don’t see me ever using the forward mount scope thingy. And I’ve seen them in the same ball park price wise.

Can someone please make a solid case one way or the other?

Several years ago I picked up an arsenel rebuilt/converted Tanker Garand converted to .308, with a Tigerwood stock! - $650 out the door. One of the single best gun buys I ever made!! I love it!!

The Tanker Garand, if done by Fulton, will undoubetedly be a better made weapon, not to mention being fairly unique. Mostly GI parts, Forged Receiver, etc. And the Squad rifle might actually cost more.

Plus Fulton Armory will stand behind their work, but then you pay a serious premium for their quality and service.

Hey Sven; already have a full size M1A; wouldn't mind learning how to shoot hi-power though. We can talk about it on Saturday.

Ok guys, I'm leaning towards the Tanker G-Rand; I've also found out the one I'm looking at has had the Fulton Armory "National Match trigger job" done on it, also it has been converted to .308. I'm still trying to find out if the conversion was done by a re-barrel or with a chamber insert.

Also the previous owner put a vortex flash suppressor on it; how hard is it remove that? I already plan (if I do indeed get the garand) on spending more money on cool garand specific gadgets and tools.

Is there a specific 'must have' set of tools for the garand?

The M1A handles scopes much better that any version of the M1. I've shot both of them a lot, and much prefer the M1A.

Ok well I went ahead and picked up the tanker garand. What put me over the edge was when the owner told me that the conversion to .308 had been done by Fulton by a re-barrel with one of their national match barrels AND he knocked $100 of the asking price.

My dealers FFL is on the way to the guy right now.
