Was in a low stand overlooking a trail when this buck showed up. Buck was a big and old eight point: Never saw him on game cameras. Chose a high behind the shoulder shot and fired: The buck went down, thrashed for about 30 seconds and lay still.

Distance: About 40 yards
Rifle: .50 Encore Muzzleloader
Scope: 4X Zeiss Conquest
Bullet: 250 grain SST in crush rib sabot
Powder: 120 grains of Black MZ
Cap: Winchester 209

Those high shoulder and high just behind the shoulder shots interrupt the central nervous system: There is sometimes a bruise on the backstrap.
I never knew that. Usually when I hit that area (it happened this season) it's because I pulled on the trigger while aiming for the vitals.

Great buck...you mentioned that he was one you hadn't seen on camera, was it 2nd runt where you are hunting? I've experienced the same thing, seeing new bucks outside their normal range late season during muzzleloader hunts. Congrats!

Nice buck, congrats.

Our mz season is going on right now, I won't make it out until the weekend though. NY is also having a late season mz hunt starting on Dec.26. Hopi g to put another in thr freezer during one of those seasons.
