i have been shooting my series 80 colt recently. today, while i was proofing some loads for it, i noticed that occasionally it likes to flip an empty straight back into my face. kind of an impolite practice, i think. happens about 4 rounds in 50...

i've been using mixed headstamps... so... do some makers just get their brass flipped back like that w/ some guns, or is this rude tendency the gun itself? how do i tell it to not do that anymore?

Every time it throws one at your head put it back in it's box for 5 minutes. Mine does this too occasionally, gives me the .45 caliber powder ring on my forehead when I catch a case mouth to the dome.

Its a Colt Thing

Got 2 Norks and they toss mixed brass in neat, tidy, pile over my shoulder just as neat and methodical Chinese are wont to do. Two Colts, like yours, have to smack me in the head every now and then, and toss the rest all over the place, just as undisciplined, spoiled brat Americans are wont to do. :D

Check your extractor tension, if it isn't right you can get erratic ejection. You may also need to dress the point of the ejector a little.

A search for "1911Tuner" and "extractor tension" should get you all the info you need.

Even with a perfectly tuned extractor, cases that have been fired and reloaded over and over several times can cause erratic ejection.
Especially if they are fired in a gun with an extended ejector.

As the rim gets battered it becomes more difficult for the extractor to get a good grip on it.
