Here in Montana it was a nice day, 45 no wind, so I went to the range. My wife is taking a ladies only defensive shooting class in April. Her pistol was fitted with Dawson sights last fall and we took it out and dialed them in. Late in the day her group was all over the place. The sights came loose, I took them back to the gun smith and he reinstalled them with loc tite. Winter set in and never got to re sight it in.

She was a bit busy today so I volunteered to go to the range and dial it back in. Tough job but it need to be done. I had forgot to bring the spotting scope so I had to go up to the paper and see what I was doing. When I got there, there was one person shooting black powder, and one shooting a couple of 22 rifles. After shooting around 50 or so rounds and going up to check targets the range got busier. One guy stood out with is NRA cap on, I noticed that there was some 45 brass left down where the guy shooting 22 was. I began to pick it up, in was my brand. Winchester 45 so as I was picking it up Mr NRA cap cut me off and started picking it up as well. I thought what ever, guess he needs it worst than me. I went back to shooting and saw some movement out of the corner of my eye. There was Mr. NRA picking up my spent brass! I stooped and looked at him, he said oh do you want this? I said Yes its mine and I want it. He sat it on the bench and left.

I thought that one when he cut me off was rude, but to come over and start to collect my spent brass was ........well, I ll keep it on the high road. If my wife would have been with me, it would have been worst, she will speak her mind.

Got her pistol dialed in, the other 80 rounds where just for fun. Got a hundred in on my xd 45 (carry gun) all in all was a good day.

There will always be someone out there like that. SOme are not. Just be cool.
Esp in this hard times, people will save if they can .

I'll do you one better. At the range I used to frequent, this woman would show up every once in a while with her kids. She had her kids filching peoples brass.

They started after my brass and I said somehting to the effect of "Hey kid, that's my brass. If you want it, the polite thing to do is ask." Ooooh budy, you should have seen the stink eye she gave me.

I would back off a little, honestly. Was it a bit rude? Yeah, sure. Was it a huge deal? No. Sounds like the guy was well-mannered enough - he set the brass down when you asked him to, without any lip or attitude. And maybe he didn't "cut you off" going for the other brass - he might not have noticed you there, or realized that you were after the same thing. I know that when I spot a few pieces of brass at the range I can be quite focused on them. And if you didn't say anything to him then "oh man, beat me to 'em" then there's a good possibility he didn't have any idea you wanted the brass he was going after later.

Just seems like you're making a bit more of it than it is, imho.

The other side of rude is the clowns who just walk away after they are done, leaving their brass everywhere. I see that more than the brass filchers.

I pick up thousands of cases just about every day I work the range, part of the "job duties". We have 5 bays and 1 long range bay. I get to work by sun up, setup the targets, pick up the trash and get everything ready for the the day. From that time till the range opens I really clean the bays. Since my shift doesn't start until 10am I have 3 or 4 hours to collect brass. It's great :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

At the only public range I go to, most people do not police their own brass, so it is open season on any brass on the range. I pick up all the .45 I can and I don't even reload yet. I usually wait until after people leave before I pick it up unless it is busy, then I just ask if they plan on keeping it. On a Saturday afternoon in April, May, and June, there is more brass than concrete visible on the firing line--looks like a brass floor.
