Prophet,

The gun is an old Iver Johnson break top in .38 S&W caliber. It belonged to my grandfather, who carried while he was a security guard at the Volunteer Army Ammunition plant in Chattanooga, TN during WWII, I have a picture of him in uniform, carrying this gun. My late uncle, Julian Pettit, carried the gun during the battle of Athens, he did not use it, to the best of my knowledge. The gun was given to me by my mother as a Christmas gift this year, it still functions, although the chrome/nickel plating is mostly gone, it is a treasure to me, and will of course never be fired again.

Tennessee, what can I say....? the Battle of Athens and the Monkey Trial...

There is a regular movie about th e Battle of Athens that was done years ago. Young people today aren't taught much history any more not that either of these topics would be included.

What happened in McMinn Co. was nothing unusual throughout the histories of most of the East Tn counties. Post WWII just brought out the fortitude in a few that had their mettle tested. The other graft and dishonesty on officials you'll never hear about unless you had the privilege of knowing and talking with those that lived it. The less populated counties had the same problems but very little has ever been said - mostly closer family ties and house burning took care of what was needed. If you have not lived for a period of time in ETn then you don't have the information to understand, it truely is not like other parts of the country, rural or not. All that said what was more or less out in the open is today pretty much well hiden and kept to small circles of long friends and trusted family.

TN is not unlike most states in that political power is concentrated within a very tight circle that is controlled by folks that have a lot of money or influence (or both).

Thanks for posting. I had never heard of it before, and I have been a part of THR for about 7-8 years now.

Proves the saying:"All that is necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing."

I grew up just south of Athens Tenn. & knew some of the fokes that lived thru this . They were proud of the actions that took place! But they were more proud that it was done with the least amount of force that they had to use! And only aft'er the law was broken by the 'leagle 'authority and only to restore their rights! But I would also like to point out, they were prepared &united! Something we are far from! We need to be prepared &united! Something that is obvious to our foes! Just a thought.

First I heard of this. Wish the pro gun guys would of brought this up in the piers Morgan gun discussion tonight
